Harry D. “Pooch” Bender

ROCHESTER, Pa.- Harry D. “Pooch” Bender, 80, of Brighton Township, died Friday evening surrounded by his family.

Born Sept. 1, 1933 in Rochester, Pa., he was a son of the late Harry H. Bender and Olive Mae Bender Thomas.

Pooch had retired in 1995 from Conrail as a rail road car foreman after 45 years, having started his career with P.R.R. and then later Penn Central before joining Conrail. He was a member of the Faith Community United Methodist Church in Rochester, and was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army, having been stationed in Germany during the Korean War.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Marcia L. Bender; two sons, Charles W. “Chutty” (Marcia) Bender of Salem and Lance S. (Carol) Bender, Chippewa; a sister-in-law, Linda (Richard) McCarriher of Baden; two brothers, Arthur V. (Judi) Bender of Monaca and John G. (Dorothy) Bender of Beaver; a sister, Arlette V. Burkett of Beaver; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday in the Noll Funeral Home Inc., 333 Third St., Beaver, where a service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday by his pastor, the Rev. Dr. Donald W. Dotterer. The Beaver County Special Unit will provide full military rites at the funeral home. Private interment will take place at Sylvania Hills Memorial Park.
