Martin Flatinger

SALEM – Martin Flatinger of Salem, passed away April 7 at Essex II surrounded by family.

Martin was born Nov. 30, 1920, in Youngstown, Ohio, the oldest of four children.

He leaves his wife, Irmgard, children Linda (Raymond) Baird, Janet Flatinger, Martin (Linda Jean) Flatinger and Dr. Renata Flatinger Boylan (Rick), 23 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and sisters, Treasa Royse and Anna (Tom) Ricketts.

He lived most of his life in Greenford, Ohio, spending winters in Sebring, Fla., after retiring.

He worked for Lykes Youngstown Sheet and Tube, as a boilermaker. Martin started in 1941 and retired in 1976. He and his wife, Irmgard, owned and operated Flatinger’s Crates from 1957 to 1964. Apple growers from miles away came to Greenford to purchase crates. Together they sponsored a local youth baseball team called Flatinger’s Crates. Martin also coached and umpired baseball for many years. He was a lifelong fan of the Cleveland Indians.

Sharp as a tack, he loved talking to people, playing solitaire, and vegetable gardening.

After retiring, he spent his past time listening to polkas, dancing and going to the local concerts to enjoy the music. He was an avid fisherman, fishing most everyday while in Florida until 2011.

He was a member of the Ruritan Club, Sportsman Club, Saxon Club, Moose and American Legions.

As a U.S. Air Force veteran of WWII, Martin received the WWII Victory Medal, American Theater Ribbon, and the Good Conduct Medal.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Adam and Anna; a sister, Rosalie; and grandchildren, Cindy and Tanner Baird.

The family would like to express their thanks and gratitude to Essex II of Salem for their outstanding care, compassion and love given to Martin.

Memorial contributions in Martin’s memory may be made to the Green Township Volunteer Fire Department at 12210 Lisbon Road, P.O. Box 14, Greenford, Ohio 44422.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 11, 2014, at the Stark Memorial Funeral Home with Dr. Allyn Ricketts officiating.

Calling hours will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, April 10, 2014, at the funeral home. Burial will be at the Greenlawn Cemetery in Greenford with military honors accorded by the Salem Honor Guard.
