George M. Batcha

Leetonia – George M. Batcha, 84, residing in Granger, IN, passed away at 3:07 pm Thursday, May 1, 2014 at his home.

He was born May 30, 1929 in West Point, OH to the late John and Anna (Trishnik) Batcha.

George lived most of his life in Leetonia, OH, moving to Granger in 2009 to be close to his daughter, Chelby and grandchildren.

On Nov. 29, 1968 in Winchester, VA, George married the love of his life, the former Jacquelyn L. Stouffer, who preceded him in death in 1992. He was also preceded by five sisters, Helen, Ann, Marge, Fran and Mary and four brothers, Joe, Frank, John, and Len.

George is survived by daughters, Stephanie (Stephen) Enz of Brownsburg, IN and Chelby (Greg) Gillis of Granger, IN; and grandchildren, Evan and Claudia Vinci; Chloe and Isabella Kaminsky; Greg, Alli and Denton Gillis; as well as many nieces and nephews.

George served his country honorably as an Army Airborne Ranger, completing 40 jumps. He was stationed in Germany during World War II. He worked at Eljer Foundry, Salem and was a lifelong member of the American Legion. He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Leetonia and St. Pius Catholic Church in Granger.

In his spare time, George enjoyed caring for his 100-acre farm on his Ford tractor. He was also very passionate about watching his grandchildren’s many athletic events where he would comment “the kids are really getting better.”

Calling hours will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday May 7, 2014 at the Woods-Rettig Funeral Home, Leetonia.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 7, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Leetonia, with Father Robert Edwards officiating.

Graveside services and burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Leetonia where the Salem Honor Guard will accord military honors.

Memorial Tributes in memory of George may be made to the Jacquelyn Batcha Scholarship Fund at Leetonia High School.
