David Merle Walker

SALEM – David Merle Walker, 57, of Washingtonville, died early Thursday morning at home.

He was born in East Palestine in 1957, a son of the late Lucinda and Merle Walker.

David was very well known in the area by his work with American Red Cross. He served as the first response on disasters in the area. He also work with FEMA, and was a nursing aide. He also ran taxis in Salem and a tow truck operator. He was a 1974 graduate of East Palestine High School.

He is survived by his spouse, Gwen Walker of Salem; children, Sarah (Adam) Crawford of Proctorville, Ohio, Philip (Sarah Morris) Bertram of Washingtonville, Sherrie (King) Bertram of Massillon, Samantha (Diane) Bertram of Kensington, Sam (Noako) Shasteen Jr., of San Diego, Calif., Christopher (Autumn) Shasteen of Hammondsville, James Shasteen of Washingtonville and David Whipkee of Minerva.

Services will be held at 8 p.m. today at the Arbaugh-Pearce-Greenisen & Sons Funeral and Cremation Services, Salem. The Rev. R. Jim Smith, Chaplain will be officiating. The burial will be private for the family only.

There will be a time of visitation from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home today prior to the services.

The family has asked that those wanting to make donations, may send or give them directly to the funeral home to help with the funeral expenses for Mr. Walker at P.O. Box 113, Salem, Ohio 44460-0113.

WASHINGTONVILLE – David Merle Walker 57, of Washingtonville, died in his sleep early Thursday morning at home.

Born in 1957 in East Palestine, he was the son of the late Lucinda and Merle Walker. He was a 1974 graduate of East Palestine High School.

Mr. Walker was very well known in the area by his work with the American Red Cross. He served as first response on area disasters. He also worked with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, was a nursing aide, ran taxis in Salem and was a tow truck operator.

Survivors include his wife, Diana Kay Shasteen-Walker; children, Sarah (Adam) Crawford of Proctorville, Philip (Sarah Morris) Bertram and James Shasteen of Washingtonville, Sherrie (Rob King) Bertram of Massillon, Samantha (Diane) Bertram of Kensington, Sam (Noako) Shasteen Jr., of San Diego, Calif., Christopher (Autumn) Shasteen of Hammondsville and David Whipkee of Minerva; 25 grandchildren; and five great-grand children.
