Ethel Mae Filler
SALEM – Ethel Mae Filler, 91, of Salem died at her home on Friday, July 4, 2014.
She was born in New Castle, Pa. to the late George and Ethel (Johnson) Filler, the first of three children, on Nov. 23, 1922.
On Nov. 24, 1943, she married C. Calvin Filler who died Aug. 4, 1980.
She is survived by sons, Leonard (Connie), Darrell (Sue), and John. Ethel had eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was a 1941 graduate of Salem Senior High School and spent 24 years in the employ of the Electric Furnace Company as a secretary and office worker.
Ethel loved and served God through First Christian Church where she was a Sunday school teacher for 60 years and was member of the Harris Class, Women’s Fellowship, Tuesday Morning Bible Study and Thursday Morning Prayer Group.
In the community, she was involved in Church Women United (president for four years and honored as the “Women of the Year in 1993), Habitat for Humanity (board member for four years), and a member of AARP. Over the years she has sewn hundreds of quilts and made thousands of pairs of children’s mittens.
She filled her days with sewing, knitting, reading and visiting friends who were shut-in. Ethel enjoyed seeing the world around her, visiting 49 of the 50 states (missing only Alaska), and she traveled to Mexico, the Caribbean, Europe, the Middle East, as well as other destinations.
A service of celebration of her life will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, July 8, 2014 in the sanctuary at the First Christian Church in Salem, with The Rev. Leonard Moore officiating. Calling hours will be held Tuesday from 1 to 3 p.m. at the church. Burial will be at Grandview Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers her family suggests a memorial gift to the American Diabetes Association, P. O. Box 11454, Alexandria, Virginia 22312 or to the First Christian Church, 1151 East 6th Street, Salem, Ohio 44460.
