Walter Edward Yates

SALEM – Walter Edward Yates, 99, of Salem, went to be with His Lord and Savior, Jesus, on Aug. 26, 2014. He was 71 days shy of his 100th birthday.

Walter was born on Nov. 5, 1914 in Knox Twp, Damascus, Ohio, the son of the late Norman C. and Mary Magdalene (Imobersteg) Yates.

Walter was a 1932 graduate of Goshen High School. Following high school he served in the Civilian Conservation Corps for two years. He was a member of the IOOF #586 in Damascus where he served as Noble Grand from 1957 to 1959. He worked for 40 years at Electric Furnace Company. He retired in 1979 as Chief Draftsman. After retirement he and his wife moved to Crossville, Tenn., where they lived and enjoyed year round golfing for 23 years. He is preceded in death by his wife, the former Erla May Hall whom he married in 1939.

He is survived by his two children, Edward Walter Yates of Crossville, Tenn., and Susanne Marie (Lou) Earlabaugh of Huntington Beach, Calif., He is also survived by three grandchildren, Christopher (Lindsay) Yates, Melissa Yates and Jade (Susan) Earlabaugh and three great grand children, Julia Yates and Caleb and Landon Earlabaugh, and numerous loving nephews and nieces

In addition to his parents and wife, he is preceded in death by his siblings, Pearl Mildred Yates, Marcine Agnes Yates, Elizabeth E. “Betty” (Neil) Kegelmyer, and Jean C. (Walter) Loesch.

A Celebration of Life Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, 2014, at the Damascus Methodist Church with the Rev. Bob Amey officiating. The burial will be in the Damascus Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family is asking that memorial contribution to be made to the Damascus Methodist Church Memorial Fund POB 307, Damascus, Ohio 44619
