Florence L. Bartholow

AKRON – Florence L. Bartholow, 88, formerly of Salem, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2015 at Summa Akron City Hospital.

She was born Jan. 23, 1926 in Flushing, Ohio to the late Louis and Mary (Hohosh) Piriak. Florence graduated from Salem High School in 1944 and Fairview Hospital School of Nursing in Cleveland, Ohio in 1947.

She began her nursing career at the VA Hospital in Hines, Illinois. After residing in the Chicago area for 16 years she returned to Salem in 1964 and was employed at Salem Community Hospital in the obstetrics department for four years and then as director of CPS until her retirement in 1986.

In 2010 she move to Stow-Glen Retirement Village in Stow, Ohio to be closer to her family. Florence enjoyed traveling, being fortunate enough to visit family in Russia in 1994. She will be remembered for her sense of humor, and her love of family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Bartholow, whom she married in 1984; brothers Andrew, Louis, William and Robert; a sister, Emma Buderi; and an infant granddaughter, Cameron Palm.

Survivors include a daughter, Jacquelyn (Michael) Palm of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio; her pride and joy, grandchildren Ryan and Allison Palm; a stepson, Clinton Howery; step-grandchildren Shanna Roessell and Satauna (Tom) Howery; step great-granddaughter Keyra Howery; and many nieces and nephews.

The family would especially like to thank Connie Hively for her years of love and support, and the Palliative Care Unit at Summa Akron City Hospital for their excellent care and compassion.

Selfless and giving up to the end, Florence has donated her body to NEOMED, possibly helping to advance medical education and research. There will be no services.
