Dorothy H. (Nichols) Gibson

SALEM — Dorothy H. (Nichols) Gibson, 99, of Salem, died at 7:05 p.m. Monday, Feb. 27, 2017, at the Brookdale Senior Living in Salem.

She was born July 24, 1917, in Munhall, Allegheny County, Pa., the daughter of the late Robert J. and Elizabeth Warren Fry Toy Harry.

She was a 1939 graduate of Mount Union University and received her bachelor’s degree in sociology. Dorothy was a member of the Delta Delta Delta and was crowned homecoming and prom queen. She was also a member of the Board of Century House and various garden clubs. Dorothy was an avid golfer and tennis player, loved gardening, delivered Meals on Wheels and read to the blind.

Dorothy married her first husband, Harold L. Nichols, in 1940, who coached in Bergholz, Cadiz and Wintersville. He was also the superintendent in West Jefferson, Mt. Vernon, Akron, East Cleveland and Newark; a professor at North Texas University, Denton, Texas, and so Dorothy lived in each corner of Ohio. After Nick’s death in 1970, she traveled the world with her sister, Jean McCulloch, and later married William K. Gibson in 1982, where they also traveled extensively until Gibby’s death in 2002.

Survivors include a son, Robert D. (Susan) Nichols, and their two children, Melissa N. (Samuel) McAdow and Robert L. (Julianne) Nichols; a daughter, Beth N. (R. David) Buck, and their two children, Christian B. (Scott) Graesser and D. Aaron (Kelly) Buck; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by a sister, Elizabeth Rennels.

No calling hours will be held and a graveside service will be at the convenience of the family.
