Walter S. Makoski

POLAND — Walter S. Makoski, 92, formerly of Greenford, died Friday, Sept. 15, 2017 at the St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown. He was born March 31, 1925 in Beaver Falls, Pa., the son of the late Alex and Mary (Bawolski) Makoski.

He is survived by two sons, Mark S. (Cheryl) Makoski of Poland and Randy J. (Marcia) Makoski of Rochester, N.Y.; five grandchildren, Molly (Luke), Calie (Louis), Lily (Alex), Andrew (Samantha) and Samuel; five great-grandchildren, Beau, Micah, Christian, Nathaniel and Elliot; and his companion and friend Doris Lockshaw.

His wife, Lois (Erich) Makoski, whom he married Sept. 27, 1947, preceded him in death on July 25, 1991. Also preceding him in death was his granddaughter Meghan, four sisters and three brothers.

Walter was employed as building and grounds superintendent for the South Range Schools for 16 years, retiring April 1990. He was a truck driver for the Panelmatic Co. in Youngstown, Ohio and a retired member of the Greenford Fire Department, as well as holding many other jobs throughout his lifetime. He was also a member of the Greenford Christian Church for more than 60 years, where he served as Board Chairman, Chairman of the Trustees, Elder, Deacon, multiple building committees, member of the choir and also director for C.T.M. (Christian Training Ministries) for more than 20 years.

Walter served in the U.S. Marine Military Police Corps. during World War II, attended Honolulu Police School and worked with the Oahu Police and Highway Department.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 22, 2017 at the Greenford Christian Church. Calling hours will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 21, 2017 at the Stark Memorial Funeral Home and 10 to 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 22, 2017 at the church. Interment will be held at Hope Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by the Salem Honor Guard at the cemetery.
