De Erla Rae Smith

LEETONIA – After living 100 years in her beloved Leetonia, De Erla Rae Smith went to her eternal home in Heaven at 11:01 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 28, 1917.

De Erla was born Dec. 21, 1917 in Leetonia, a daughter of Raymond and Helen Thorpe Smith. She was a 1935 graduate of Leetonia High School and also attended the Youngstown Business School.

She worked within the Bank One system for 40 years, retiring in 1981. She had also served as treasurer for the Leetonia Library for 28 years and also as treasurer for the Village of Leetonia for 26 years. De Erla was a well known soloist and served as choir director at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church for 38 years where she was a member. She was a member of Columbiana TOPS Club #720 and the Iva Chapter Order of the Eastern Star.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Dale T. Smith; a sister, Jean B. Renkenberger; and a niece, Sylvia Smith Brownlee.

She is survived by five nieces, Carolyn (Gary) Baker of Salem, Jane Renkenberger of Columbiana, Debby (Scott) McClain of New Castle, Pa., Annette (Jeff) Calicoat of Tipp City and Barbara Smith of Tipp City; two nephews, Dale (DeeDee) Smith of Troy and Randy Renkenberger of Homeworth; three great nieces, five great nephews, 13 great great nieces, and six great great nephews, and her dear friend, Vivian Reemer of Columbiana.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to all of her caregivers this past five months.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 30, 2017 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church with Pastor Kari Lankford officiating. Burial will follow at Oakdale Cemetery. Friends may call at the church from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Saturday. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Memorial Fund.
