Dr. Benjamin S. Francisco MD

ILLINOIS – The Salem community sadly lost a longstanding member on Saturday, Oct. 6, 2018 when Dr. Benjamin S. Francisco MD, favorably known as ‘Dr. Ben,’ 98, passed peacefully at the JourneyCare hospice center in Illinois.

He was born Nov. 16, 1919 in Tondo Manila, Philippines, the son of the late Yldefonso and Vicenta (Silvestre) Francisco. He lived in Salem, Ohio for 57 years and moved to Illinois after the death of his wife of 59 years, Marie (Horvath) Francisco, in January 2017 to live with family.

Benjamin studied engineering and medicine in the Philippines and also served in the Philippine Army for the US during WWII Japanese occupation. His family and friends convinced him to come to the US where he completed his medical internship and residency in Cleveland, Ohio, Lancaster, Pa., and Ravenna, Ohio. Benjamin met Marie during his residency in Lancaster and later married in September 1957.  He came to the Salem Community Hospital to work as ER House Physician in 1959 thru 1964.  Dr. Francisco then maintained his private practice in Salem from January 1965 thru September 1992.

Dr. Ben was a member of the St. Paul Catholic Church, sang in the choir, and lead the Boy Scouts of America on several excursions. He greatly enjoyed woodworking, tinkering with cars and cooking. His absolute favorite thing was having family and friends together for a good meal.

Survivors include two daughters, Patricia (Tom) Beaschler of Fremont, Ohio, and Catherine (Brad) Jones of Highland Park, Ill.; two sons, James (Ellen) Francisco of Hudson, Ohio, and Vincent Francisco of Salem, Ohio; and nine grandchildren.

Benjamin was also preceded in death by seven sisters and four brothers.

A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, 2018 at St. Paul Catholic Church with Father Robert Edwards officiating. Calling hours will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Stark Memorial Funeral Home. Burial will be at the Highland Memorial Park in Beloit.
