Elderly need legal protections, too

T he need for everyone to look out for children became apparent many years ago in Ohio. Requirements that many professionals, including teachers, report suspicions of abuse were the result.

But the elderly? Somehow they fell through the proverbial cracks. Fortunately, that is changing. The state has added to the list of people required to report suspected abuse, neglect or exploitation of older Ohioans. More health care, financial services and legal professionals have been added.

Good. But that should not let the rest of us off the hook. If you suspect an older person is being victimized, call the authorities.

Remember: We all grow older. One day, we may need protection, too.
