Salem X-Tra Mile Club expresses gratitude

To the editor:

The members of the Salem X-Tra Mile Club would like to thank all who contributed toward making the 24th annual running of the Star Trax 5K Night Run a success. At 9 on the evening of Saturday, Aug. 5, a field of 479 registered runners raced out of Reilly Stadium onto the luminary-lined streets of Salem to benefit the Salem Senior High School’s boys and girls cross country and track and field programs. The 24th annual run honored Mr. and Mrs. Ted Yuhaniak, long time supporters and volunteers of the Star Trax 5K Night Race.

The Star Trax 5K Night run features a United States Track and Field certified 5,000 meter (3.1 miles) course making it one of the premier races in northeastern Ohio. This year’s race drew runners from as far away as Abilene Texas, Sleepy Hollow, Ill., Florence, S.C., and Bradenton, Fla. The field of 479 runners were once again strong and competitive and the men’s overall top runner for the 24th annual Star Trax race was Eric Rupe from Youngstown, Ohio, with a time of 15:54. The women’s overall top runner went to Sarah Bashinski from Poland, Ohio, with a time of 19:32.13.

We are indebted to all of our sponsors listed below who provided financial support as corporate T-shirt or trophy sponsors. It is because of you that our kids are well equipped, look great and most importantly represent the Salem City Schools and Salem community proudly! Thank you.

Thank you to the following: Jim Phillis and the Salem City Streets Department, Salem Auxiliary Police, Salem Firemen, Salem Safety and Parks Department, Salem Independent Hose Club and members, EMT Ambulance for providing emergency medical transportation, the families providing our course “Water/Soak Station.” Most of all, thank you, to the community and residents living along the race course. Your enthusiasm and help in placing and lighting the nearly 800 candle-lit luminaries over three miles of race course is what sets our race apart from the others. Runners continually comment on all the support and words of encouragement that are offered during the run. These are the kind of things that make our community stand out and keep the runners returning year after year. Salem’s community support is number one.

Team running in Salem has a rich history of excellence including seven state titles in cross country and most recently a state runner-up finish in track and field. We’re very proud of our dedicated coaches and athletes and the Salem X-Tra Mile Club is proud to support them. We pride ourselves in putting on what we feel is a premier race designed around showcasing our beautiful community, hospitable citizens, and generous sponsors.

Next year’s race is our silver anniversary so please save the date of Aug. 4, 2018, and help us make the 25th year memorable.
