Ending DACA would be absurd and inhumane

To the editor:

Diversity is what makes us great. Our different cultures, ideologies, lifestyles, and beliefs makes up our country. They are our friends, neighbors, co-workers, and part of our country. They own business and work to help the American economy. I am talking about the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals or known as DACA. This program helps protect DREAMers from being deported.

Currently in the United states there are nearly 800,000 people who are enrolled in the DACA, and nearly 1.3 million people eligible for the program. The average age of these people that came to this country is 6 and half years old. This is the only life and country that they’ve grown and lived in. The current administration wants to end this program and deport these individuals. This is absurd and inhumane.

According to Newsweek, 72 percent of DACA have higher education while 5 percent of them own their own business. Ending DACA would result in 700,000 people losing their jobs, both American citizens and DACAs. The US Economy would take a hit too, resulting $460 billion lost in GDP in the next 10 years (Glum, 2017). So what’s the logical reasoning to do this? Create more jobs or “take those jobs back that were stolen”? If DACAs were to be deported, the US economy would lose money and results in job lost. Taking back the jobs that were “stolen” that DACAs are qualified to do or does the work that no one else wants to do would hurt business. Or is it because of crime? There’s no evidence that DACAs are more likely to commit a crime than average US citizens.

Just imagine being told to go home when this country is the only home you ever had. To be forced to go to another country you never been to grow a new life. This is the possibility of what DACAs are being faced with. Some of these countries would likely kill them for being “westernized” or even being a LGBT. To even considered doing this to people is just bogus and heartless.
