Donations to United Way help with local needs

To the editor:

At this time of year we all get flooded with requests from charities for donations, and it can be overwhelming to know where your dollars will help the most. This year, please consider our local United Way.

Our local United Way is one of 1,300 independent United Ways across the globe. As United Way Board President, I can assure you that your dollars will be used to help local families, children and seniors who are facing hardships. Our Board of Directors, made up of local citizens, carefully reviews all funding requests and expenses to keep our overhead low so that donor dollars go to where it is needed locally. We have one part-time employee who serves as our executive director. We rent one room in the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce building.

Our local United Way supports 20 independent not-for-profit agencies serving the northern portion of Columbiana County. These organization provide a wide range of services to this area. We support groups working with youth teaching them citizenship and self-sufficiency. We support the only battered woman’s shelter in the County. We support organizations that enable senior citizens to stay in their homes longer when they are ill or infirm. We support a group that provides kits to families displaced by abuse or entering foster care or who need diapers or other necessities. We support the local food bank in Hanoverton. We support the local Meals on Wheels in Columbiana. We support the local hearing and speech clinic held on Saturdays in the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Salem. We support the Salem Memorial Building that provides space to the Banquet and other groups as well as recreation services. We help Habitat build homes for local families. We help provide aid to those in need through providing funds for bills, rent and food. We provide assistance to agencies that help those who have been burnt out by fires or have a service member family in need. We support agencies providing assistance to individuals and families dealing with drug addiction.

Every year that I can recall, there have been devastating hurricanes in the south and wild fires in California. These people suffer greatly from these calamities and deserve our support. But the TV news crews seldom feature your neighbors who need assistance right here locally.

At your local United Way, our mission is to serve those people.

Please consider supporting the United Way of Northern Columbiana County this season. Our address is 713 E State St; Salem, OH 44460. Our web site is http://www.unitedwayofncc.org/

where donations can also be made. On our web site you can also see list of the agencies we support.

Thank you for your consideration and have a blessed Holiday and Christmas season.

Very truly yours,

Roger E Hack,

Board President
