Seems like I heard that with the smart meter, Edison has control of your usage during peak hours. How I don't know, originally it was thought they could control your thermostat. Don't know if any of that was true, but considering the way things are going I wouldn't trust them. Remember the light bulbs!

Smart meters record and transmit usage data to the electric company. Read: 24 hour surveillance of your home. UnConstitutional. They can tell what you are using, and when.
Modern appliances, including your a/c, can be turned off from the power company during peak usage if they see fit. Tough noogies if your old and suffering in the heat.
