The fact is, no one knows how they will react until in the actual situation. The military and civilian police forces around the country provide intensive training in differing scenarios, in hopes that the training will kick in before the fear does. As the agent said, once you make the decision to intervene there is no turning back. So, if I would find myself in such a situation, I would first ask God for the strength and wisdom to take the action required, then in spite of my soiled, wet britches, try.

As a responsible, law abiding, community oriented, intelligent person, you calmly take out your concealed weapon and you surprise the shooter with two in the chest and one in the forehead.
