How interesting Mrs Thatcher is doing the bidding for the Cahill TAC program. It is all well and good the the Cahill's are willing to put themselves out there to obtain grants to help revitalize the downtown area. Ihey have also bought several buildings and are in process of restoring them, which is all well and good. Mrs Thatcher wants people to donate money to fix up the rest of the buildings, they have people who own them it is their responsibility to maintain their building not the citizens of salem. Once again we are trying to solicit money on the backs of the citizens to maintain the property of deadbeat business owners, this is not acceptable. Let the building owner pay for their property no one pays to maintain mine except me and that's the way it should be downtown, you own it maintain it. I would rather give my money to the Police and fire depts. than to a project that Cahill is touting!!

I disagree that if a downtown fails, so does the entire community. That isn't true at all, and I would imagine you could find many examples of towns across the country with a downtown that basically fell off and another part of the town grew--similar to what is happening here on the East side. I'm in favor of revitalizing downtown, but it has to be done the right way. Taking money from the citizens is not that way. Asking people to donate is fine, but until this letter from Mrs. Thatcher, the $50-$100 annually had been proposed as a tax.

I believe that if a Community is failing, so goes the downtown. And I believe that has been happening, not the reverse. Shore up our community and the rest will follow.
