Well those 2 will never realize what is happening. all they want is money to fix up buildings of deadbeat owners. People should donate money to Police dept to help combat crime rather than fix up someone elses property. what happened at walmart today is a tragedy for the families of both victims. We all know that crime is on the rise. we need to help our police not fix up buildings.

this is horribly sad, but honestly what could have more officers done? How is this a city problem? This type of crime can happen anywhere. Salem has its problems, this simply is not one of them.

A police off standing right couldn't have stopped it .

A nut job out of towner comes to his ex's place of employment, shoots her and then himself and this is an example of out of control crime in Salem? Police couldn't have stopped this.

By the way, the fact that he had a concealed permit is completely irrelevant.

The fact that he had a CCW permit is irrelevant as Grant said. This is just another example of how people in this country cannot cope with their problems. Just another example of the media making people who own/carry guns look like terrorists.

I think there's a lot going on this country and world to make it hard to cope.

All I read in these comments is how it effects the city of Salem, how it's not the fault of those who have a CCW permit, etc. Where are the condolences for the poor soul who was killed or the fact that her 5 year old daughter no longer has a mother. From these comments I'm glad I don't live in Salem, the city with no pity.

If I felt sad for every bad thing that happened to every person in the world I would wollow in so much pitty I could not function. It is truly sad for the victims in this situation, especially the child. My point was that the CCW issue was made an issue by the paper. The paper did not tell is she had a child. Opinions, not facts.

The weak point of the background check system is that HIPPA rules forbid access to mental health records.

CCW permits create false security. It's not the permit, it's that individual with that privilege. Not two people carrying a CCW permit will have the same reasoning for why they have one or need one.

notSocialist...BRAVO, you nailed it. It won't be long and those permits will be under fire for stricter issuing requirements.

Why do people draw a conclusion when the investigation is not complete yet?

We don't know where these two lived. Just because the police was able to find identification on them doesn't conclude anything. She could be living right here in Salem or staying with friends. She may have never changed her driver's license address.

How about we wait until the investigation is complete.

And Salem news thank you for keeping us informed with any available information you had available at the time you posted this article. All issues and contributing factors are important.

Watchdog you do realize that it does not matter if ccw or not. He could've easily carried a gun without a permit like a lot of criminals do. I don't give two craps what you or other libs think. I carry to protect my wife and kids And do you know why? Criminals don't follow the law, that's why they're criminals!

Yup, and the police can't be everywhere. You have to be able to protect yourself these days.

I thought that was funny too NS. I have heard watchdog called a lot of things but liberal is not a label that I think can be pinned on her. She is anything but liberal.

another murder within what a month? and the ending another child without their parent...fellow workers dealing with her death..salem is not the city of peace as it once was..you can get a gun and carry without a permit as we have seen in the past. thank you salem police for doing a good job. peace and prayers for the families-the daughter she leaves behind...peace and prayers be with her fellow workers, especially those who witnessed this cowardly act.

Not that this is relevant, as has already been pointed out, only asking cause I don't know the answer....if she had a protection order against him, does that make the CC permit invalid??

This is not a commentary on any gun laws, but I too would like an answer to KsBug79's question, because I don't know either:

"if she had a protection order against him, does that make the CC permit invalid??"

The answer is yes.

"(A)(1)(a) If a licensee holding a valid license issued under section 2923.125 or 2923.1213 of the Revised Code is arrested for or otherwise charged with an offense described in division (D)(1)(d) of section 2923.125 of the Revised Code or with a violation of section 2923.15 of the Revised Code or becomes subject to a temporary protection order or to a protection order issued by a court of another state that is substantially equivalent to a temporary protection order, the sheriff who issued the license or temporary emergency license shall suspend it and shall comply with division (A)(3) of this section upon becoming aware of the arrest, charge, or protection order. Upon suspending the license or temporary emergency license, the sheriff also shall comply with division (H) of section 2923.125 of the Revised Code."

Can't argue with that.

I wonder which county issued it. It can be your home county or any county adjacent to it, if I remember.

" It won't be long and those permits will be under fire for stricter issuing requirements. "

People with mental problems should not be allowed to possess firearms. We don't know the man's history, but he was obviously distraught that night.

The mass killings in the last few years have involved mentally defective people, whether they got their weapons legally or illegally. Yet, after all the ranting over in DC, this fact seemed to hardly be discussed, let alone seriously considered.

Mentally ill people could easily be flagged in the NICS system, without intruding on the privacy of the general public.
