2.8 million pounds? That's an atrocity. People do you know how many pills it takes to just come up with pound. I swear this sickening. You ask yourself why prescription drugs are so high, why you pay for outrageous health care costs. This is part of the problem. I would LOVE to know the total cost of those unused drugs about to be destroyed that our insurance companies pay for and the costs dumped on us through our premiums. Billions and billions of dollars of waste.
I know the good behind the process is to get these drugs out the hands of children, but for Godsake, when are we going to start smacking down hard on the DRUG PUSHING DOCTORS? When? This has to stop.
Money Money Money
Sometimes it's legit. Sometimes there are medications left after someone has died. Or pain pills were prescribed but not all were needed (there are some of us who want to get by with aspirin, etc. at some point rather than keep taking stronger stuff). Or a person has taken something but there is a reaction so something else is prescribed. And some people wrongly stop taking things before they should. All those leave you with pills, legitimately prescribed. Just with those 4 scenarios, my guess is there is a LOT of "leftover" pills.
That said, as a nation, we are over prescribed.
There is a prescription drug related death in this country every 19 minutes, and the lady that hates a plant that no one has ever died from ingesting hates the idea of taking some of the pills off the street? Unreal.

Watchdog you will be happy to know your concerns with merit are being addressed.
The efforts of law enforcement in these "Drug Take Back Days" have been very instrumental in opening the eyes of Insurance companies, legislators and consumer protection agencies.
This year a new law went into effect. It is probably at this point the only good thing that came out inside the Obamacare mass of laws, if that was even possible with the nightmare that has been imploding from the roll out. That crack down is on Physicians and institutes getting kickbacks from pharmaceutical and medical device companies are all under close scrutiny. There are at this point, 250 Doctors that are under investigations and indictments for "prescription pill pushing" for kickbacks and have been paid huge amounts of money for writing those prescriptions. Lots of patients were being prescribed drugs that they did not need.
The State of Ohio, our Physicians and Institutes have received $83,34

Pharmaceutical companies are now being forced to reveal the names of Doctors and Institutes that receive kickbacks. There is a website set up right now that you can actually go to and type in your physician's name and find out if your Doctor gets kickback for writing prescriptions.
