Local teachers participate in arts program

Teachers from Columbiana, Mahoning, and Trumbull counties have completed the Fine Arts Standards Guide for Families resource series, a set of guides now available on the Ohio Alliance for Arts Education's website at "ww.OAAE.net.

A set of the guides were sent to each school district's superintendent throughout the state with support from the Ohio Art Education Association and Ohio Foundation for Music Education.

Ohio's Academic Content Standards were created to guide teachers regarding what students are expected to know and be able to do at any given grade level. Over the years, the Ohio Department of Education developed guides in other academic areas, but not the arts.

Arts educators participating in the Ohio Alliance for Arts Education's Mentor Project saw a need to articulate the academic content standards for the arts in the same manner the Ohio Department of Education had communicated those addressing the other core academic subjects.

Sue Simpson, past president of the Ohio Alliance for Arts Education, began working with the Mentor Project in 2003. Her vision to bring the practicing arts educator into a role leadership came to fruition year after year. The project has served arts educators across the state in nearly every region.

The Mentor Project was most successful in Northeast Ohio and has proven to be a valuable component of the work carried out by the Ohio Alliance for Arts Education. The expertise, time, and passion given to the completion of the Fine Arts Standards Guides for Families by Ohio's arts educators is more than commendable-it has been a service to Ohio's 1.8 million students and their families.

The Fine Arts Standards Guides for Families are available in PDF format (grades K-eight, and high school) at www.OAAE.net and are ready for you to download, print, and distribute to your students and families. You are also encouraged to visit the Ohio Department of Education's website at www.ode.state.oh.us; click on Standards and Instruction to view Ohio's arts content standards (dance, drama/theatre, music, and visual art) in their entirety.

Schools represented and participating teachers in the Fine Arts Standards Guides for Families project are: Beaver Local School District, Project Director Elayne Lowe and Layout Editor Sammi States; Canfield Schools, Heidi Garwig, Nancy Hulea, and Diane Leonard; Columbiana Exempted Village, Margaret Jones and Holly Zolonish; and Warren City Schools, William Burgess, Jeffrey Johns, and Paul Sweeny.

The Fine Arts Standards Guide for Families series are funded in part by the Ohio Arts Council, the Ohio Alliance for Arts Education, The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Kennedy Center Alliance for Arts Education Network, Ohio Foundation for Music Education, and the Ohio Art Education Association.
