Rowland earns nursing degree
LEETONIA-Melissa Rowland graduated from Kent State University on May 10 with a degree of science in nursing and received her Ohio Board of Nursing license on July 10. She is the daughter of Jeff and Debbie Rowland of Leetonia, and a 2004 graduate of East Palestine High School. Rowland has accepted a position of R.N. at Akron General Hospital.
McVicker receives scholarship
ALLIANCE-Mollie McVicker of Alliance was recently awarded a $1,000 scholarship for her forthcoming semester at Mount Union College by the Copper and Brass Servicenter Association. She is a junior majoring in middle childhood education.
McVicker was one of only 12 students nationwide recognized for a scholarship by the international trade group, which awarded scholarships to children of employees of CBSA's servicenter or supplier member companies.
McVicker, highly recommend by her professors, was cited by CBSA for her academic achievements, work-related activities and outside interests. A former professor stated "Mollie is a great leader ... I fully support (her) in all that she is pursuing," when recommending her for this award.
McVicker has also submitted with her application a requisite essay, "Why I Chose Middle Childhood Education as My Major."
CBSA is composed of more than 40 distributor (servicenter) companies-with approximately 200 locations-selling fabricated copper and copper alloy products including sheet, plate, coil, rod, bar, pipe, tube, etc. throughout North America. It also has more than 30 supplier member companies, brass mills and metal platers.

Howley earns Heritage Award
ALLIANCE-Nicholas Howley of Columbiana has been awarded a Heritage Award to attend Mount Union College. He plans to pursue a degree in computer science.
The award is based on a review of the academic a credentials including curriculum, GPA, ACT/SAT scores and class rank. The award is renewable for four years as long as the recipient is a full-time traditional student at MU.
Howley is a senior at Columbiana High School. He is the son of Ed and Dawn Howley.
WB plans new student registration
BELOIT-West Branch Local Schools will be registering new students from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Aug. 4-14 for the 2008-09 school year. Registration will also be open until 6 p.m. Aug. 6.
Registration for all grade levels will be held in the superintendent's office located in the high school building. Parents are to bring the child's birth certificate, Social Security card, custody papers (if applicable), shot records, and proof of residency. Gidley, Storm earn recognition
WAYNESBURG, Pa.- Kristy M. Gidley of Salem and Rachell M. Storm of New Waterford are among the students at Waynesburg University who are recognized for outstanding academic achievement for the spring term 2008.
Local students graduate from SRU
SLIPPERY ROCK, PA. - The following area students were among the spring 2008 graduates of Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania.

Spatholt joins honor society
COLUMBIANA-Alexzandra J. Spatholt of Columbiana, has been inducted into Tau Beta Pi, the engineering honor society, at the University of Cincinnati.
A junior majoring in biomedical engineering, she is the daughter of Dave and Virginia Spatholt, and a 2005 graduate of Columbiana High School.
While at the University of Cincinnati, Spatholt has served as vice president of the Society of Women Engineers, Secretary of Engineering Ambassadors and the Secretary of Kappa Theta Epsilon, a cooperative education honors fraternity. A dean's list student and involved in the honors program, Spatholt commits herself to advocating for women in the STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). She has worked as a research assistant under Dr. Mark Schulz at the University of Cincinnati on the development of a nanoscale based biosensor. Spatholt has also worked as a co-op at Nike Inc. in Beaverton, Ore., as a cushioning engineering in the Advanced Innovation department.
Tau Beta Pi is the second oldest honor society in the nation and represents the highest honor to be obtained by an engineering student. Membership is awarded on the basis of high scholarship and exemplary character.
Malloy awarded MU scholarship
ALLIANCE-Katherine Malloy of Leetonia has been awarded a Dean's
Scholarship to attend Mount Union College.
A senior at Salem High School, she was a four-year letter winner in softball, where she served as captain and received an Academic Award. She also was a member of the Starfish Program and the German Club.
Eligibility for the Dean's Award is based upon outstanding high school academic achievement and demonstrated aptitude for college on the ACT or SAT-I examinations. This award is renewable for four years as long as the recipient maintains a 3.0 cumulative grade point average and is a full-time traditional student at Mount Union.
Malloy is the daughter of Rick Malloy and Kelly Waters. She plans to pursue a major pre-law.
Practice GED exams scheduled
LISBON-The Columbiana County Career and Technical Center GED/ABLE Program will offer Practice GED exams at two locations. A practice exam will be held at 4 p.m. July 31 at the Career Center located on Route 45 in Lisbon. A morning practice exam will be held on Aug. 5 at 9 at Shining Reflections GED Site on Market Street in East Liverpool. United will register new students
HANOVERTON-United Local Schools will hold new student registration for the 2008-09 school year on Aug. 4 and 5.
United Junior/Senior High School will take appointments from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. United Elementary School will accept appointments from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. New student registration packets may be picked up in both offices on July 31. Parents must provide their child's birth certificate, Social Security number, immunization records, two proofs of residency and any custody documents, if applicable.

Smith joins Scholars Society
INMAN, S.C.-Miranda Smith of Inman has been selected for membership in the National Society of High School Scholars. She is the daughter of Rick and Kathy Smith, formerly of Salem.
She is also the granddaughter of Brenda Smith Syppko of Salem, and the late Harold R. Smith and the late Lois and Albert Beeson.
Miranda is a junior at Chapman High School in Inman where she holds a 4.25 grade point average. She is a member of the National Beta Club and the National Art Honor Society.
Johnson earns degree from Va. Tech
BLACKSBURG, Va.-Kerry Johnson of Salem was among the Virginia Tech students honored at the university's spring commencement ceremony held on May 9 in Lane Stadium.
Johnson received a bachelor's of science degree in human nutrition, foods, and exercise from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.

CINCINNATI-Three area residents graduated from the University of Cincinnati during the 2007-08 spring quarter.
