Mr. and Mrs. Harry D. Karlen, 12375 Seacrist Road, Salem, were honored on the occasion of their 50th wedding anniversary at a reception on June 28 at the Bunker Hill United Methodist Church. Approximately 200 friends and relatives attended. The couple renewed their wedding vows during a ceremony officiated by the Rev. Ralph Fotia of Maple Heights, the minister who married them 50 years ago. He was assisted by the Rev. Jerrie Brion.
The former Naomi Ruth Goehring and Mr. Karlen were married on June 15, 1958, at the Bunker Hill United Methodist Church in Beloit.
Mr. Karlen was employed by the Goshen Township Road Department for 40 years, retiring 1995, and also is a part-time driver for Myers Equipment. He is on the church's board of trustees and a member of the choir. For 10 years he served as a 4-H advisor.
Mrs. Karlen was a bank bookkeeper for 10 years and self-employed in lawn care. She serves as financial secretary at the church and has been a member of the choir for 24 years. She also is a cook for the Goshen Center Ruritan Club for the past 13 years.
The festivities were hosted by the couple's children and family, Sherry (Chuck) Stanley of Bell, Fla., Darlene (Rev. Dr. Henry) Woodruff of Chardon, Laurie (Sam) Ronshak of Lisbon, and Gene Karlen (and partner Phillip Aiello) of Cleveland Heights. Assisting with serving were Pat Coy and Mary Lou Weingart.
Also joining in the celebration were the couple's grandchildren, Chris and Jacob Stanley, and Karli and Jenna Ronshak. A grandson, Todd Stanley, is deceased.
