Brye earns scholarship from Univ. of N.Dakota
GRAND FORKS-Brendan Brye of Winona received the Elizabeth J. Larimore and Sadie P. Mathews Community of Learners Scholarship from the University of North Dakota for the 2008-09 academic year. Brye, son of Courtney and Elaine Brye, graduated from United Local High School and plans to attend UND in the fall.
The Elizabeth J. Larimore and Sadie P. Mathews Scholarship is awarded to students chosen for past academic performance. Larimore was one of the earliest settlers of the Larimore, N.D. area. Her sister, Sadie, graduated from the University of North Dakota in 1900.
The Community of Learners Scholarship is awarded to high school seniors who have shown exemplary achievement in both high school GPA and in test scores. This scholarship program is intended to honor and reward students who contribute to enhancing UND as vibrant and connected learners.
ACT Preparation Workshop being offered
SALEM-Workforce Development and Continuing Studies at Kent State Salem is offering an ACT Preparation Workshop. The eight-hour workshop (done in two four-hour sessions) is designed to assist in achieving better scores on the American College Test (ACT) and to expose students to efficient test-taking techniques. Students will review specific types of questions often found on the ACT. Practice tests will help discover "weak spots" and learn what to do about them. The textbook Barron's "How to Prepare for the ACT Assessment" is provided.
The first workshop is being held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m Oct. 11 and 18 at the Salem location on state Route 45. The fee is $75 which includes the textbook. It is recommended to attend the session closest to your scheduled ACT exam. The next workshop dates are in November, January and March.

Butch awarded degree from Oklahoma State
SALEM-A total of 842 students were awarded degrees from Oklahoma State University in Stillwater at the end of the 2008 summer session, according to the Office of the Registrar.
Among the graduates is Edward Thomas Butch of Salem who received a master's of science degree in educational leadership studies.
KSU Salem Workforce offering Quick Books
SALEM-Kent State Salem Workforce Development is offering QuickBooks at the Salem City Center, 230 N. Lincoln Ave.
The prerequisites for this course are keyboarding and knowledge of basic Windows.
QuickBooks is being offered on Tuesday/Thursday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m. from Sept. 23 to Oct. 2.
This class is designed for individuals who want to use QuickBooks as a business accounting system and covers EasyStep Interview to set up QuickBooks: adding accounts, customers, tracing invoices, purchases and payments, recording inventory and assets plus much more. Learn to create a company and use all the features that QuickBooks has to offer. Cost is $125 which includes the text.
This will be followed by a six-hour QuickBooks II offering for those who are interested.

Substitute teacher training planned Sept. 19
LISBON-Substitute teacher training will be offered from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 19 at the Columbiana County Educational Service Center, 38720 Saltwell Road.
