ACT prep workshops scheduled

SALEM-Workforce Development and Continuing Studies at Kent State Salem and East Liverpool are offering ACT preparation workshops. The eight-hour workshop (done in two four-hour sessions) is designed to assist in achieving better scores on the American College Test (ACT) and to expose students to efficient test-taking techniques. Participants will review specific types of questions often found on the ACT. Practice tests will help discover "weak spots" and learn what to do about them. It is recommended to attend the session closest to your scheduled ACT exam. Textbook Barron's "How to Prepare for the ACT Assessment" is provided.

The next workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 22 and Dec. 6 at both campus locations. The fee is $75, which includes the textbook. The next workshop dates will be in January and March.

Benefit Association Branch 654 will meet

SALEM-The Loyal Christian Benefit Association Branch 654 will meet at 7 p.m. Nov. 6 in the St. Paul School gym. The program features a "book party" for Heartbeats, a ministry of the Sister of the Humility of Mary dedicated to working with developing world countries and artists, and helping womens groups gain self-esteem.

SCH Auxiliary will meet Nov. 13

SALEM-The Salem Community Hospital Auxiliary meeting begins at 9:30 a.m. Nov. 13 in the hospital's private dining room next to the cafeteria. Dave Talbert from the Salem Police Department will present "Your Personal Safety."

Breakfast buffet plans at Masonic Temple

SALEM- The public is invited to a breakfast buffet from 7:30 to 10 a.m. Nov. 22 at the Salem Masonic Temple, 788 E. State St. Cost is $6 for adults, $3 for children under 10, and free for children under 2. The menu offers pancakes, waffles, sausage, scrambled eggs, bacon, homemade sausage gravy, biscuits, homefries, toast, fruit cocktail and beverages. Carryouts are available. The building has a handicapped-accessible elevator. Proceeds are directed to the Salem Masonic Temple Building Fund.

SHS Class of 1951 will meet

SALEM-The Salem High School Class of 1951 will meet for breakfast at 9 am. Nov. 5 at Timberlanes.

Leetonia grads meet on Nov. 4

LEETONIA-The Leetonia High School Class of 1951 plans to meet for breakfast at 9 a.m. Nov. 4 at Timberlanes.

Pollock will serve as speaker

ALLIANCE-Salem Aglow Lighthouse will meet at 10 a.m. Nov. 4 at Perkins Restaurant and Bakery. This month's speaker is Sally Pollock of Salem.

She is a member of Believer's Christian Fellowship of Salem and serves as an elder of spiritual life. She also teaches an adult Sunday school class and a home Bible study. A retired nurse, Pollock has been been a widow for 31 years and has three grown children and seven grandchildren.

Bazaar Extraordinaire planned

SALEM-The Salem Community Center will host its third annual Holiday Bazaar Extraordinaire from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 22.

Vendor are needed to sell homemade crafts or specialty items. Table rental is $25 each or $30 with electric. Tables must be reserved by Nov. 14. For more information or to reserve a space call the Salem Community Center at 330-332-5885.

Car program presented

DAMASCUS-Bob McBride and Ray Stanley presented a program, "Antique Ford Cars," at the Oct. 21 meeting of the Damascus Area Historical Society at the Pearce House. Twenty members and guests attended.

The society received $5,000 from the Pearce Foundation for a new high efficiency furnace in the Pearce House. Ed Steer made a motion to purchase the furnace which was seconded by Ray Stanley.

The new Bryant furnace will be installed by Coffee Heating. The society also received a thank-you card from Jane Thomas of Rodman Library. It was announced that there will be no newsletters this fall. The Thanksgiving dinner will be held at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 11. Cost is $12. Tickets may be purchased before Nov. 8 by contacting Ruth Herbert at 330-337-8850 or Mark Baker at 330-537-3939.

Seven and One Club meets

SALEM-Tracy Sekely was a guest when the Seven and One Club met Wednesday evening at the home of Mrs. Jack Bruderly. Following a luncheon members played games of 500.

Prizes went to Mrs. Larry Dearth, first; Mrs. Gerald Mincks, second; Mrs. Herb Bott, low and travel. Names were drawn for the $20 "secret" Christmas gift exchange.

The next meeting begins at 7 p.m. Nov. 19 at the home of Mrs. Fred Weingart on West South Range Road. Mrs. Weingart will be celebrating her birthday while entertaining club members.

Christian Women will meet

COLUMBIANA-Community Christian Women will meet on Nov. 10 at the First Christian Church. Larry Kannal, a motivational speaker from Kent, will speak. His topic is titled "Leadership in the Home."

Lunch will be served at 12:30 p.m. Cost is $5. Reservations should be made with your church representative before Nov. 6.

Bazaar, rummage sale planned

NEW WATERFORD-The United Methodist Women of the East Fairfield United Methodist Church, 45675 State Route 558, will hold their annual bazaar and rummage sale from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Nov. 4.

The bazaar will feature homemade candy, baked goods, homemade soup, apple dumplings, books, etc. A soup and sandwich luncheon will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Group visits The Barn in Shreve

SALEM- A trip to The Barn in Shreve was the highlight of the Oct. 14 meeting of the Linnea Nelson Circle of the First Baptist Church.

Elaine Davis offered prayer and conducted a brief business session prior to departing. She displayed the cinnamon stick favors to be made during the November meeting.

The items will be taken to the nursing homes in December when bingo will be played by the residents.

Members were asked to bring components for the favors and to send birthday and holiday greeting cards to the scholarship student and special interest missionaries.

The next meeting begins at 9:30 a.m. Nov. 11. Leora Brink will serve as hostess and devotions by Dorothy Jean Crowe.

West Point Lions Club meets

WEST POINT-President Jane May welcomed members and guests, Zone 9 Chair Ruby Heldman and Vice Governor Don Heldman, to the West Point Lions Club meeting on Oct. 20 at St. Agatha Hall. Veronica Wolski offered the invocation and benediction.

A donation was approved for the American Cancer Society.

The club is currently collecting pop can tabs that will enable an individual to a dialysis treatment. West Point School is requesting used books and games for kindergarten through fourth grade. Members may bring them to the next meeting. Chairperson Dolly Campbell will deliver the items to the school. The Zone 9 chairman has delivered the calendars for the club. Past President Charolette Davis will be in charge.

The second Zone 9 meeting will be held at the Lisbon Lions Building, hosted by Lisbon Lions. Don Heldman spoke on the 2009 spring conference which will be held in April, with various seminars to be held. He also spoke of the efforts the district has in starting new clubs within the district. Davis received an award from Lions Club International for Membership Growth Challenge for 2007-08.

The Nov. 3 meeting will be held at St. Agatha Hall. A board meeting begins at 6:30 p.m.

R-Weigh groups meet

SALEM-The R-Weigh weight reducing groups met Monday at the Faith Chapel and recorded a loss of 39 pounds for the week. Good losers at the 1 p.m. meeting were Suzanne Hause, Judy Baker, Ruth Wright and Gayle Cook. Goalie of the week was Nicole Mahouski.

Best in class awards in the school contest went to Helen Baker, Leota Donaldson, Jane Yonkey and Baker. The senior class won the fruit award. The good loser at the 5 p.m. meeting was Sara Smith. Janel Anderson was the goalie of the week and Linda Lude received the birthday award.

Best in Class awards in the school contest went to Joan Schafer, Dot Smythe, Morgan Kinser, Helen Mincks, Sharon Bigalow, Sue Smith, Sara Smith, Shirley Dias, Betty Sellers and Anderson. Next Monday will be graduation for the school contest and valedictorians and salutatorians will be honored. Details on a new November contest will be given.

A loss of 39 pounds was recorded at the Oct. 27 meeting. Good losers at the 1 p.m. meeting were Sandy McGarr and Ruth Wright. Judy Baker received the eight weeks of losing monetery award and Karen Morris won the can-do monetery award.

Graduation in the school contest took place with valedictorians being Lou McAngus, Nicole Mahouski, Jane Yonkey, Morris and Wright. Salutatorians were Faith Hodnick, Judy Baker, Leota Donaldson, Dianne Scott and McGarr. All received a monetery award.

Good losers at the 5 p.m. meeting were Carol Santee and Jennifer Walker. Sue Smith was the goalie of the week and received the birthday award. Janice Bennett lost over her vacation and received a monetery award. Graduation in the school contest took place with valedictorians being Sarah Agee, Dot Smythe, Jessie Rea, Janel Anderson, Linda Lude, Vi Woodall, Shirley Dias and Jo Carol Gray. Salutatorians were Diane Hart, Patty Hartman, Esther Salmen, Marlene Shirilla, Sue Smith, Catherine Baird, Karen Pauline and Virginia Ciotti. All received a monetery award.

A new contest starts Nov. 3 with the members being paid $2 per pound for their losses through Nov. 24.

Concert series, food drive set

SALEM-The popular "Christmas with The Keelings" concert series and charity food drive is coming to Salem this year. A limited number of free tickets are now available for the concert which will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13, at the First Friends Church, 1028 Jennings Ave. Tickets may be requested from the church or by sending a self-addressed stamped envelope to The Keelings, P.O. Box 62, Hadley, Pa. 16130.

In addition to the free tickets, attendees are asked to bring two non-perishable food items to donate to the First Friends Food Pantry.

"Christmas with The Keelings" is a specially produced concert of Christmas and Southern Gospel music. The Keeling family is in its 15th year of its gospel music ministry and has become known as one of this region's premier Southern Gospel singing families. They recently received the 2008 Keystone Award which is given annually to an individual or group who has done something extraordinary during the past year to uplift Jesus Christ in the field of Southern Gospel music.
