Dog licenses are now available
By MARY ANN GREIER, Salem News staff writerLISBON - Columbiana County dog owners can begin purchasing tags for their pets today, with a deadline of Jan. 31 to renew the licenses or risk late fees.
According to Ohio Revised Code, all dogs at least 3 months of age or older harbored in the county must be licensed, with a tag costing $8 for each dog.
Pre-printed renewal applications were mailed out recently by county Auditor Nancy Gause Milliken who asked that dog owners bring the form with them when purchasing tags in person or return it through the mail to 105 S. Market St., Lisbon, Ohio 44432 with a postmark of Jan. 31 or earlier.
Applications carrying a postmark of Feb. 1 or later will be charged a late fee of $8 per license per dog.
The applications sport a new look this year, with bar codes to get the information on a new Web site aimed at keeping track of dogs and to ease the processing of the dog tags.
Milliken introduced the new web site last month, noting someone who finds a lost dog can input the tag number, if it's attached to the collar, and find out who owns the dog so they can be reunited immediately rather than having to call the dog warden right away.
The web address located at www.columbianacountydoglicense.com also allows pet owners to print out their own license renewal if necessary.
"We're getting a good response from it," Milliken said.
New pet owners can't print out an application online at this time, but she said they can still get an application at her office in the Courthouse in downtown Lisbon or by visiting one of the outside vendors selling tags during the licensing period. Tags for new dogs can be purchased throughout the year at her office.
Kennel licenses must be purchased at the Columbiana County dog warden's office at 8455 County Home Road, Lisbon, Ohio 44432. Kennel licenses won't be available at the auditor's office.
Dog licenses purchased from an outside vendor will be charged the $8 tag fee and a 75-cent processing fee. After the Jan. 31 deadline, tags will have to be purchased at the auditor's office or at the dog pound.
Milliken noted a change in one vendor location this year in East Liverpool, from Smith Farm Supply on East Liverpool Road to Four Seasons Mini Mart on Calcutta-Smith Ferry Road.
Beginning today, the Web site will include the names of the outside vendors where dog licenses can be purchased. The Web site also includes links to the Columbiana County Humane Society, Angels for Animals and the county Dog Pound.
