Program will inform residents

April 5, 2009
By KEVIN HOWELL, Staff Writer

Village residents now have one more way to stay attuned to village happenings.

According to Village Administrator Gary Phillips, the village is utilizing a Really Simple Syndication (RSS) program to provide alerts and notices to village residents via computers and cell phones, distinctly separate from e-mail.

By signing up on the Leetonia Web site, www.leetonia.org, residents can receive any updates quickly, typically in the form of an alert on one's home web page, such as google or yahoo, or cell phone, Phillips said. The alerts, such as a water emergency, and notices, such as spring clean up times, are already available on the Web site, he added, but the new program allows users to receive those messages without having to continually check the site.

"I know that a lot of people won't use this, but it is an option that is out there for our residents," Phillips said.

Crediting resident Dan Bennett for suggesting the idea, Phillips said the village is always looking for ways to enhance its communication with and between its residents, noting that the Web site also provides a list of local businesses to help promote business in the Leetonia area. To join the free service residents can visit www.leetonia.org, click on one of the current notices at the bottom of the page and then subscribe through one of the available feed readers.
