Super Nats block party set today

SALEM - The fifth annual Stadium GM Steel Valley Super Nationals is closing in and events leading up to it continue today with "The Block Party for the After Party" at Wings Warehouse and The Hickory Rib from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m.

The two restaurants are located on South Ellsworth Avenue.

The Uptown Saturday Night Band will play all the cruise-in favorites. The schedule includes kid-friendly activities, cornhole tournaments, a guitar hero play off and more.

The cost is $5 for ages 18 and up and the Logo Design Contest winner will be announced.

The orange "General Lee," Dodge Charge, a "Duke's of Hazard" replicar, is scheduled to appear.

The Steel Valley Super Nationals will be be held at Quaker City Raceway June 19-21 and the big event in downtown Salem will be the Terry's Tire Town After Party.

Opening ceremonies for the after party will be held at 6 p.m. Friday with flag raising and the unveiling of the Salem Hot Rod Gals pin-up poster while the Uptown Saturday Night Band will again feature cruising favorites from 6:30 until 8:30 p.m.

Quaker City Raceway, a Salem landmark since 1957, is located three miles north of town on state Route 165, between state Route 45 and U.S. Route 62.

Summit Racing Equipment has signed on as the title sponsor at the race track and promoter Corey Ward said "BigFoot" will appear while hs is working on other celebrity appearances for the event.

The Stadium GM Super Store in Salem has been with the Super Nats since its second year at Quaker City Raceway. The event helped launch the after party in downtown Salem.

The Super Nationals has grown with each year, and Ward said last year's three-day attendance at Quaker City Raceway hit the high 20,000 mark.

Events leading up to the GM Stadium Steel Valley Super Nationals include "The After Party Poker Run" on Saturday, June 6, which will be held with family fun activities at Stone Ridge Terrace.

The cost is $10 per vehicle and enters drivers in the poker run and provides admission for fishing and swimming for the day at Stone Ridge .

The "General Lee" is scheduled to appear and a "Daisy Duke" contest will be held while R U for Racing will hold a lawn mower derby.

The on Thursday, June 18, the downtown after party kick-off cruise gets underway sponsored by Dunkin' Donuts and cruises from the east to the west sides of town. There will be Tunes ' n Trivia from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m.
