129 enter Quilt show

By LARRY SHIELDS
POSTED: June 27, 2009

SEBRING - The "Quilts for All Seasons" show at Sebring High School continues today with about 129 entries, according to coordinator Miriam Good.

The judged show is hosted by the United Quilt Guild of Columbiana County and expects to see more than 800 people attended by the time the door close at 5 p.m. today.

The show starts at 10 a.m. and Good said there are 13 vendors and $820 in total prize money has been awarded to quilts entered from as far away as Arizona, Georgia, Ohio (Columbus), Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

Officials said the "Quilts for All Seasons" demonstrates each quilters creative interpretation of that theme which includes 20 categories.

Quilts are of all sizes from baby- and bed-sized to large, spacious wallhangers.

Pat Williams of Canfield won the overall "Best in Show" for her "Divas Garden Party" a 43 by 48 inch adaptation of Bunny Leighton patterns. Williams said she has been quilting since 1976.

Good has the backing of 16 committees which process entries and vendors, give demonstrations, and put the show together. It has been held at the Kent State University Salem Campus and at Sebring High School for the last few years.

She said the judging was done on Thursday and ran for more than 10 hours after starting at 8 a.m. She said 20 percent of all the profits the guild earns are donated to a local charity. This year it's the Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley.

Also earning "best" honors were Janet Kekel of Salem for the best use of color in her "Hawaiian Star," Linda Henderson of Salem for best machine quilting with her "A Quilt for Every Season: A Season for Every Quilt" 90" by 90" quilt.

Also Janet Deemer of Lisbon won the best hand quilting award for "Heidi's Flower Garden" while the judge's choice went to Jennifer Greenleaf of Salem for her "Star Wedding Ring" that was machine quilted by Pat Firestone.
