Romigh graduates with
honors from Wright St.
DAYTON-Wright State University in Dayton recently awarded a bachelor's of science degree in biomedical engineering to Griffin David Romigh, son of Terry and Libbie Romigh of Beloit. The 42nd semiannual commencement took place on June 13 at the Nutter Center in Dayton.
Romigh, a 2005 graduate and valedictorian of West Branch High School, graduated summa cum laude as a University Honors Scholar, the highest distinction the university confers. At an earlier awards reception he was honored as the Outstanding Biomedical Engineering Student for 2009. As a University Honors Scholar he completed a program of eight honors courses and a program of advanced, independent study in biomedical engineering titled, "A Basis for Hearing Protection That Preserves Situational Awareness."
During his years at WSU, Romigh interned three years at the Wright Patterson Air Force Base in the research labs of the 711th Human Performance wing as an engineering technician. During this time he published several papers on Virtual Auditory Displays. He also traveled to Oregon to present his research at the Acoustical Society of America. In addition Romigh was selected to teach Introduction to Engineering Mathematics to first year engineering students at Wright State and local post-secondary high school students.
While at WSU Romigh was awarded the Honors Competitive Scholarship, the Valedictorian Scholarship, the Hynes P. Murka Scholarship, the Robins and Meyer Scholarship, and early admission into the Wright State University School of Medicine as part of the Early Assurance Program. Romigh received the U.S. Department of Defense S.M.A.R.T. Fellowship and will pursue his PhD in electrical and computer engineering at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA. As part of his fellowship, Romigh will return to WPAFB's research lab each summer to continue his research and work for a Department of Defense research lab after receiving his PhD.
Cingcade graduates with
distinction from ONU
ADA-Megan L. Cingcade recently graduated with distinction from the College of Pharmacy at Ohio Northern University.
She received the doctor of pharmacy degree. On campus, Cingcade was active in the French Club, Kappa Epsilon pharmacy fraternity for women, Northern Christian Fellowship, the womens cross country team, the womens indoor track team and the womens outdoor track team.
She is the daughter of Thomas and Shelly Cingcade, 29990 Carey Road, Salem, and a graduate of West Branch High School.
Jill Bica earns dean's list
at Youngstown State
EAST PALESTINE-Jill Bica, daughter of Tom and Vickie Bica of East Palestine, was named to the dean's list with all As for the spring semester at Youngstown State University. She is a first year early education major.
Matthew Bica graduates
with honors from Kent
EAST PALESTINE-Matthew Bica, son of Tom and Vickie Bica of East Palestine, graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor's of arts degree in psychology from Kent State University on May 16.
Bica was selected a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Psi Chi, and graduated as a Honors College Scholar. A 2005 graduate of East Palestine High School, he plans to attend the University of North Texas in the fall to work on his master's degree.
Anderson earns dean's
list at Kent State Univ.
SALINEVILLE-Chelsee Anderson has been named to the dean's list at Kent State University for the spring quarter 2009. She is the daughter of Rick and Margee Detrow of Salineville and Scott and Shirley Anderson of New Waterford.
Anderson is a 2007 graduate of Southern Local High School and will be a junior this fall, pursuing a degree in nursing.
She is the granddaughter of Mike and Penny McGrath of Boardman, and Marcella Gabriel of Salem, and the late Eugene Gabriel.

BEAVER FALLS, Pa.- The following area students recently graduated from Geneva College this spring. They were awarded a diploma on May 16 at the college's commencement ceremony.

Shoaff achieves dean's
list at Emory College
ATLANTA, Ga.-John-Alex Shoaff of Salem was named to the dean's list of Emory College, the undergraduate, liberal arts college of Emory University in Atlanta, Ga., for the 2009 spring semester. He is the son of John E. Shoaff and Tami A. Shoaff of Salem.
Miller earns scholarship
from Athletic Board
The Northeast District Athletic Board has awarded Maggie Miller of United High School a $500 scholarship.
Only 36 scholarships were awarded in the entire northeast district of Ohio. The scholarship was based on athletic ability, leadership, and character.
This award was presented to Miller at an awards banquet hosted by the Northeast District Athletic Board in Akron. Miller is the daughter of Bill and Nancy Miller. She plans to attend Mount Union College this fall and play basketball.
Salineville-Southern Alum
awards scholarships
SALINEVILLE-The Salineville-Southern Alumni Community Scholarship Foundation recently awarded 20 scholarships totaling $19,500, at the 117th annual Salineville-Southern Alumni Banquet.
The foundation was founded in 1987 to recognize academic excellence by awarding scholarships to qualifying graduating seniors. Since then, through generous donations from alumni and other supporters, 220 students have been awarded scholarships totaling over $176,600.
The 2009 scholarship recipients, their parents, and chosen colleges or universities follow:
Receiving $2,000 SSAC Scholarships were four valedictorians: Taylor N. Flory, daughter of Kayla Taggart (YSU); Nathan C. Jones, son of Dennis and Debbie Jones, (YSU); Jennifer R. Saling, and Julia R. Saling, daughters of Nancy Saling and the late Dan Saling, (West Liberty College).
Salutatorian, Nicole D. Beadnell, daughter of Richard and Rhonda Beadnell, received a $1,500 Sky Financial Group Foundation Scholarship: (West Liberty College).
Receiving $1,000 SSAC Scholarships were: Anthony L. Davis, son of Mary Ann Szalkowski and Paul Davis, (YSU); Michael A. McVay, son of Harry and Amy McVay, (KSU); and Hannah R. Kelm, daughter of Cheryl M. Smith,(YSU).
Ethan C. Blatch, son of Wilbert and Carolyn Blatch, received a $500 Lloyd W. Bentley Jr. Memorial Scholarship and a $250 SSAC Scholarship, for a total of $750 in scholarships, ((YSU).

Heath receives master's
degree from Scranton
SCRANTON, Pa.-Darrin Heath of Beloit was among the 677 who receive a post-baccalaureate degree at the University of Scranton graduate degree commencement. Heath received a master's of science in educational administration at a ceremony in Scranton's Byron Recreation Complex on campus on May 30.

Gardner, Selway receive
ACS scholarships
The 2009 American Cancer Society Scholarship recipients are Joshua Selway and Mellay Gardner.
Selway graduated from Leetonia High School and plans to attend Ohio State University in the fall. He will be majoring in business/risk management.
His parents are Randy and Cathy Selway.
Gardner graduated from Salem High School and will attend Grove City College, majoring in political science with plans to minor in a foreign language (French or Mandarin).
Her goal is to do humanitarian work in a third world country. This summer she will travel to Jamica to experience first hand a third world culture and to help children with vacation Bible school.
She is the daughter of Jim and Diane Gardner. The AMC's Salem Relay For Life will be held June 26-27 at Waterworth Memorial Park.

SALEM-The American Legion Auxiliary Buckeye Girls State program has been the scene of campaign slogans, songs, and promotions on the Ashland University campus.
Buckeye Girls State, is an Americanism program with 900 high school juniors participating, is designed to educate the citizens of of tomorrow in city, county, and state government functions and operations where they learn the rights and responsibilities of citizenship.

Whitfield gets doctorate
from Ohio State Univ.
COLUMBUS-Clifford A. Whitfield, Ph.D has graduated from The Ohio State University with a doctorate of philosophy in aeronautical and astronautical engineering on June 14.
He was in the 1999 graduating class of Beaver Local High School, where he then pursued aerospace engineering at The Ohio State University, receiving his bachelor's and master's of science in 2004 and 2006 respectively.
During his career at The Ohio State University, he worked at the Aeronautical and Astronautical Research Laboratory with several faculty, industry and military personnel. His focus was in the fields of applied aerodynamics, multidisciplinary air vehicle design and flight test engineering. He was also active in the classroom serving as a lecturer and laboratory instructor for the undergraduates within the department.
Forming Whitfield Aerospace LLC in 2005, he expanded his experience in the field as an Aircraft Design Consultant and Test Engineer/Analyst; with recent efforts in the development of a U.S. Air Force Unmanned Air Vehicle for Solar-Regenerative High Altitude Long Endurance morphing flight.
Richards inducted into

BATON ROUGE, La.- The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi has announced that Michael Thomas Richards of Salem was recently initiated into the Phi Kappa Phi Chapter at Youngstown State University where he is pursuing a master's degree in counseling. Richards is among approximately 30,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year.
