July 4th activities
The following Fourth of July activities will be provided by various cities and villages.
Salem
The Salem Memorial and Patriotic Association will hold its annual fireworks display at dusk Friday at Waterworth Memorial Park. This year's display has been provided by the Salem Rotary Foundation and veteran groups of the association, as well as generous community citizens. Veterans will be selling 50/50 raffle tickets to help offset the cost of the fireworks.
The association will help sponsor the pet parade and decorated vehicles parade on July 4. The pet parade begins at 1 p.m., followed by the vehicle parade featuring bikes, wagons, strollers, etc. The parade will form at the corner of Pershing and Broadway. There will be trophies and goody bags for both parades. The categories for the pet parade are largest, smallest, most unusual, best-dressed, cutest and furriest. Trophies will be given by age groups. Parking lot closed
The new section of the parking lot, accessed off of Sunset Boulevard and near the Salem Community Center, will be closed to traffic because of safety during the Friday evening fireworks display, the Salem Fire Department said.
The lot will be blocked at noon Friday. Due to safety rules, pedestrian traffic between Waterworth Memorial Park and the community center will be restricted and eventually prohibited prior to and during the fireworks.
Columbiana
The day of free activities on July 4 in Columbiana includes:
Fishing contest, ages 3-12, 8:30-11:30 a.m., duck pond; bring your own pole.
Pet show, 11 a.m., near the football field.
Canoe races, 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m., duck pond.
Family games and activities, 1-3 p.m., east end of football field.
Ice cream eating contest, ages 3-12, 3 p.m., concession area.
Watermelon eating contest, ages 12-16 and 17 and over, 4 p.m., concession area.
Calliope Concert, by Doc Pritchard, 5-6 p.m., gazebo.
Canfield Community Band Concert, 7-8:30 p.m., gazebo.
Flag-bearing sky divers, 8:30 p.m., football field.
Tribute to veterans, 8:40 p.m., football field
Flag ceremony, presented by American Legion Post 290 Color Guard and the Canfield Community Band, 8:50 p.m., football field.
Fireworks Display, by B.J. Alan-Phantom Fireworks, 10 p.m.; rain date of 10 p.m. Sunday.
A 50/50 raffle drawing will immediately follow the fireworks.
Guilford Lake
The Fourth of July Guilford Lake Boat Parade begins at 2 p.m. All boats must be pre-registered, insured and liability release forms signed. Sign-up at the Guilford Lake Grille, Mark's Landing, or the state park office until July 3. For information call 330-222-2282 or 330-770-9191.
Minerva
The Minerva Heritage Holiday is being held at the Minerva Municipal Park and at Minerva High School in the new auditeria and the parking lot outside the school.
July 3: Book sale, Minerva Library; Municipal Park, Community Building, craft show , 11 a.m.-7 p.m.; Midway, food vendors and inflatable toys for children and games for all ages, noon-5 p.m.; Miss Minerva Pageant, Minerva High School auditeria, 2 p.m.; Municipal Park, Bur-le-ques square dancing, 5-6 p.m.; Heart of Country Cloggers, 6:30-7:30 p.m.; Border Line Band.
July 4: Pancake and sausage breakfast, 8-10 a.m., St. Paul's Lutheran Church, E. Line St.; Municipal Park, Community Building, craft show; Midway, inflatable toys, food vendors; Minerva High School auditeria, quilt show display, art exhibit, flower show; Minerva Pool, open for free swimming, noon-6 p.m.; Haas Museum, open from noon to 4 p.m.; Garden tour, 1-5 p.m. with a rain date of July 5 at the same time, tickets for the tour will be sold at the Community Building; Cathy Horn will sing patriotic songs in front of the Minerva Village Hall until 2 p.m.; Minerva Heritage Parade begins at 2 p.m., line up begins at p.m. at Rotary Park; fire truck at Municipal Park; music at Minerva High School by Sight Unseen, 7 p.m.; movie shown by Shawn Hetrick of the Minerva Art Group, 9 p.m.
July 5: Craft show, Community Building, 11 a.m.-4 p.m.; quilt display, art exhibit and flower show, Minerva High School auditeria; car show, noon-4 p.m., parking lot; Relay for Life duck derby, 2 p.m., Municipal Park; Gospel Spirits and Speelman Sisters, 2 p.m.
North Lima
Beaver Township will present an Independence Day program featuring the Youngstown Area Community Concert Band at 7 p.m. today at Woodworth Park. Admission is free. Attendees are encouraged to dress comfortably and appropriately for the weather and to bring blankets or lawn chairs because seating is limited.
The rain date for the 90-minute performance is July 9. Woodworth Park is off Eastern Reserve Road between Market Street and Southern Blvd.
Today's concert is part of the township's 2009 Concert Series which runs through Aug. 26. For more information about activities in the township's parks contact the Beaver Township Park Board at 330-549-9552.
New Waterford
The New Waterford Fourth of July fishing tournament will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. in the park. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. Prizes will be awarded in each of the three age groups (5 and under, 6-10, and 11-15). After the tournament there will be free food and beverages for everyone. There will also be prize giveaways for children and adults.
