Votaw awarded scholarship to Akron

AKRON-Abbey Votaw of Lisbon was awarded a full academic scholarship from the University of Akron to begin her studies.

Votaw was a member of the National Honor Society and is undecided about her intended major.

She is a 2009 graduate of David Anderson High School.

Cotter named to John Carroll dean's list

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS-Chad R. Cotter of Salem has been named to the dean's list for the spring 2009 semester at John Carroll University.

Area residents on Waynesburg dean's list

WAYNESBURG, Pa.-Four area residents have been named to the dean's list at Waynesburg University for the spring term 2009.

Columbiana: Ryan M. Williams.

Lisbon" Jordan R. Wrask.

New Waterford: Rachell M. Storm.

Salem: Kristy M. Gidley.

Stacy earns dean's list at Kent State

WELLSVILLE-Matthew S. Stacy has been named to the dean's list at Kent State University main campus for the 2009 spring semester where is majoring in pre-pharmacy.

He is a 2005 graduate of Wellsville High School and the son of Sue Stacy of Wellsville.

Roelen graduates from KSU with honors

SALEM-Jacob Roelen graduated from Kent State University with honors.

He earned a double major in accounting and finance. He is continuing his education this summer going full time to achieve a master's in accounting and enough hours to sit for his CPA.

Roelen will begin working as an accountant for Ciuni & Panichi Inc., in Beachwood on Sept. 8.

A 2005 graduate of United Local High School, he is the son of Jay and Arlene Roelen of Salem.

Local students achieve dean's list at OU

ATHENS-Ohio University recently released its dean's list for the spring 2009 semester at the Athens Campus.

Cash, Griffith earns academic honors

PERRYSBURG TOWNSHIP- More than 2,800 students were named to the academic honors list at Owen's Community College for the spring semester 2009. Area students include:

JCC offering justice studies degree

STEUBENVILLE-Area residents have a chance to earn a bachelor's of arts degree in justice studies (criminal justice) from Kent State University by taking classes on the Jefferson Community College campus in Steubenville.

Beginning this fall semester, the Department of Justice Studies at Kent State East Liverpool will offer upper division justice studies coursework on the JCC campus. A registration and information session will be held at 1 p.m. July 15 in room 1211 at JC where representatives from JCC and Kent State East Liverpool will be available to start the registration process and answer any questions.

By combining an associate's of applied science degree from JCC with a bachelor's completion program offered through Kent State-East Liverpool, a student can earn a four-year degree in Steubenville on JCC's campus.

"Jefferson Community College is pleased to announce this exciting, new partnership with Kent State University-East Liverpool," said Tom Hawley, assistant professor and director of the Law Enforcement Program at JCC.

This bachelor's degree option is the latest addition to a growing list of opportunities for area residents to advance beyond their associate degree by taking upper level classes on the JCC campus.

Local students make Miami's dean's list

OXFORD-Miami University has announced its dean's list and awarded 3,217 degrees to students during spring commencement exercises on May 9 at Yager Stadium.

Students who achieved a 3.5 or better grade point average for second semester 2008-09 and named to the dean's list are:

East Liverpool: Elizabeth Marie DiLoreto, Jenna Marie Yanni.

Hanoverton: Corey Alexander McDonald.

East Rochester: Kelsey Lauren Pilati.

Area graduates include:

East Liverpool: David Robert Bickerton, bachelor's of science in business; Jenna Marie Yanni, bachelor's of science in business.

Columbiana: Tyler David Crider, bachelor's of science in engineering.

Lisbon: James Devin Rodgers, bachelor's of music, magna cum laude.

Salem: Kathryn Elizabeth Johnson, bachelor's of science in business.

Ritchie receives MU Trustee Scholarship

ALLIANCE-Jessica Ritchie of Lisbon has been awarded a Trustee Scholarship and a Music Proficiency Award to attend Mount Union College.

A senior at Leetonia High School, she is a member of National Honor Society, band and Academic Challenge.

Trustee Scholarships are awarded to students with an ACT score of at least 27 or SAT-1 score of at least 1220 and either a minimum grade point average of 3.5 or a high school rank in the top 15 percent of their class Awards are for up to half tuition, the amount to be fixed at the tuition rate during the student's entering year. This award is renewable for four years as long as the recipient maintains a 3.0 cumulative grade point average and is a full-time traditional student at Mount Union.

Entering students who demonstrate exceptional proficiency in music may be considered for the Music Proficiency award. The awards vary in amount and are renewable for four years provided the student exhibits continued excellence and growth in the proficiency area in which the scholarship was initially awarded.

Ritchie, daughter of Blaine and Aimee DeSellem, plans to pursue a major in music education.

Methodology being taught at Kent

SALEM-Kent State University Salem and East Liverpool Workforce Development is offering classes to achieve a certificate which is recognized across the United States as well as internationally. The proven and powerful Lean Six Sigma methodology will be taught using in-class examples, simulations and hands-on exercises to ensure that students have a practical, working knowledge of the tools.

The class is valuable to those who are working, as well as those who are looking to add to their skills and enhance their employability. Participants will gain skills using the methodology and tools of both Lean and Six Sigma. The emphasis is on gaining process knowledge with critical thinking, variation reduction, and developing team members in the organization who are focused on improving customer satisfaction, decreasing defects, costs and cycle time, while generating business growth and breakthrough improvements.

A basic understanding of Microsoft Excel is a prerequisite. (A Basic Excel Class is scheduled prior to the beginning of the Green Belt program for those who need this prerequisite-$129)

To receive certification students will be required to work case studies and pass a written exam at the end of training. Instructor, Jim Odom, a Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt, has experience with various functional areas including manufacturing, finance, engineering, logistics, Human Resources and Information Technology. He has trained top executives and coached Black Belt and Green Belt Teams in both manufacturing and transactional areas.

The fee for this 80-hour program is $2,650 which includes all required classroom text and materials and lunch each day. The program is being offered at both KSU Salem and East Liverpool locations. The Salem program will be at the Kent State Salem City Center running on Monday, Tuesday and Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 24 through Sept. 15. The East Liverpool program begins Oct. 12.

Lean for the Office and Quality Certification Test Preparation classes are also available this fall. Slavens will participate on advisory panel

SALEM-Cindy L. Slavens was recently selected to participate on the Ohio Department of Education's State Advisory Panel for Exceptional Children.

Her three-year term spans from July 1, 2009 to June 30, 2012. The panel was developed in accordance to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEA) to receive board input related to special education and related services for children with disabilities, ages 3 through 21.

The panel's mission is to advise ODE in meeting unmet needs of these children and in developing and implementing policies, rules or practices to serve them.

Ohio was recently named as one of 30 U.S. states and territories by the U.S. Department of Education to the highest of four performance categories for fully meeting requirement of IDEA Part B as measured by the State Performance Plan.

Slavens was also recently named as the team leader of the Ohio Action Team (SAT) for the Knowledge and Information Network (KIN) through the Family Support Center on Disabilities, a national organization. The charge of the group is to collect information and resources based upon the agreed upon two state priorities. The data collected will be disseminated on the KIN website in the near future.

Slavens is the executive director of the Family and Community Resource Center and involved in state and local organizational activities.
