Banquet in Salem

SALEM-A long-time sponsor, Tri-County Church of God, will serve the Banquet in Salem from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Memorial Building with church members as volunteers.

The menu offers ham, potatoes, green beans, vegetables, fruit, applesauce, rolls and cookies. New sponsors are needed for both the Monday and fourth Thursday meals. For information call 330-337-3125.

Financial gifts for meals that do not have a scheduled sponsor may be sent to The Banquet in Salem, P.O. Box 792, Salem 44460.

Fibromyalgia series

SALEM-Fibromyalgia is a syndrome that impairs the joints and soft tissues, causing chronic pain.

Although related to arthritis, fibromyalgia is a rheumatic disorder affecting about two percent of the population. While fibromyalgia is not fatal, it is often misunderstood and can cause severe fatigue, pain and sleep disturbances that disrupt daily life.

To learn more about taking control of fibromyalgia, Salem Community Hospital is partnering with the Arthritis Foundation, Northeastern Ohio Chapter to offer "Breaking the Fibromyalgia Pain Chain."

The four-part Arthritis Foundation series will meet on consecutive Wednesdays from 6 to 8 p.m. in the hospital's private dining room.

Each session will explore a different aspect of fibromyalgia to educate patients and offer ways to cope with its unique challenges.

Participants may attend all four courses for $35, or select individual sessions for $10 each. Individuals who register for all four sessions will receive a free Arthritis Foundation book.

The sessions are: Oct. 7, Understanding Your Disease; Oct. 14, Pain Management; Oct. 21, Diet and Exercise; Oct. 2, Complementary Therapies and Stress Reduction. Pre-registration is required.

Fair board election

LISBON-The Columbiana County Agricultural Society will hold its annual election of fair board directors from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 7 in the Arts and Crafts Building.

You must be a member of the agricultural society to be eligible to vote. Any member interested in becoming a candidate may pick up a petition at the fair office by calling 300-424-5531.

Petitions are to be filed with the appropriate signatures by 4 p.m. Sept. 30.

Cooking classes set

SALEM-The Salem Community Center's Adult Cooking Classes with Mike Cranmer will be held on Sundays from 3 to 5 p.m. from Oct. 18 through Nov. 22.

Participants will learn how to spice up their Thanksgiving menu this year with Cranmer's twist on favorite dishes.

Those who register for the entire six-week session will receive a meal voucher for Mike's Penn Avenue Grille ($15 for individual or $25 for couple). Session registration begins Sept. 30.

The registration deadline is Oct. 12. Individual registration begins Oct. 5, with the registration deadline 72 hours (Wednesday) prior to individual classes. Space may be limited for individual registration.

Registration is transferable, but non-refundable.

Alzheimer's Assoc.

The Alzheimer's Association has scheduled its monthly Caregiver Support Groups on the following dates:

4 Oct. 1, 7 p.m., Alliance Community Hospital, 200 E. State St., Alliance.

4 Oct. 19, 6:30 p.m., First Presbyterian Church, 436 E. Second St., Salem.

4 Oct. 28, p.m., Carnegie Public Library 219 E. Fourth St., East Liverpool.

4 Oct. 29, 11 a.m., Minerva Public Library, 677 Lyndwood Drive, Minerva;

Soil district banquet

SALEM-The Columbiana Soil and Water Conservation District's annual banquet and election begins at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 22 at United Local High School.

A buffet-style Swiss steak dinner will be served. Tickets are $11 and may be purchased by calling 330-332-8732.

The deadline for ordering tickets is Oct. 13. Tickets must be purchased in advance. No tickets will be sold at the door. One supervisor will be elected and awards presented.

Voting for the candidates will be held from 6:15 to 7:30 p.m.

Landfill program

BEAVER TOWNSHIP-Kim Lewis of the Mahoning County Green Team will present an "Incredible Edible Landfill" program at 1 p.m. Oct. 2 at Woodworth Park.

Using a model landfill, she will enlighten attendees about landfill diversion and the importance of practicing the "3 R's: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle."

Lisbon Ghost walk

LISBON-Columbiana County Families of Homicide Victims is hosting a Ghost Walk through Lisbon beginning at 4 p.m. Sunday at the gazebo. Cost is $5 per person and free for children under 12. Audit session

NEW WATERFORD-The Village of New Waterford has scheduled an audit committee work session at 5 p.m. Tuesday in the Village Community Building. The internal audit reports will be reviewed.

Duck Race planned

LISBON-The Beaver Creek Wildlife Education Center is holding its annual Duck Race at 3 p.m. Oct. 4 during Harvest Days at Beaver Creek State Park. Tickets are available at the Wildlife Center, during Harvests Days and from volunteers. Cost is one for $2 or three for $5. The first prize is $100, second prize $50 and third prize $25.

First Night Salem

SALEM-First Night Salem 2010 Committee will meet at 7 p.m. Oct. 8 at Republican Headquarters, 230 E. State St.

Police, fire retirees

YOUNGSTOWN-Police and Fire Retirees of Ohio, District Two Chapter 10 will meet at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 8 at the Brandywine Clubhouse, 3390 Flo-Lor Drive. Macular Degeneration

SALEM-Mike Bosela of the Youngstown Radio Reading Service will visit Sterling House on Oct. 8 to speak to the Macular Degeneration support group about the private, non-profit station serving the print impaired with specially tuned radios that are provided free of charge to qualified listeners. SALEM-Former AT&T-Ohio Bell Telephone Operators will meet for breakfast at 8:30 a.m. Oct. 15 at the Salem Hills Golf and Country Club.

Ballroom dancing

SALEM-Ballroom dancing classes are being offered in October at the Salem Memorial Building. Instructor Amy Riehl will teach on Tuesday evenings. Cost is $5 per session. For information call 330-332-5512.
