WASHINGTONVILLE-Village officials were shocked at the regular village council meeting Monday night when a valued member of the police force suddenly resigned.

Detective Sgt. Brian Deack, who had been with the department since January of 2005, submitted his resignation effective Wednesday, surprising everyone in attendance. He had recently served as acting chief while candidates were interviewed following John Finch's resignation in August.

Mayor Norm Sommers said he believed Deack had taken a position with another department in the area.

The department has seen several officers leave the department recently- a chief, two sergeants and a patrolman have resigned since Aug. 31- which prompted an executive session with Chief Ken Faust during the meeting to discuss the direction of the department.

In other news, council hired Blacktop Specialists of Poland to resurface Spear Alley for an estimated $6,000. Council President Will Jones said the roadway is in very poor condition and needed more than just gravel put down. The company will clean, pave and coat the roadway, as well as adjust the alley's approach at state Route 14.

Council also announced that a drop box has been installed at Village Hall for residents to drop off their water bills to eliminate postage costs. The box is for checks or money orders only.

The village will host a Halloween costume party from 5 to 7 p.m. Oct. 28 at the village hall, featuring prizes for best costumes, free hot dogs and and treat bags.

The next meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Nov. 2 at Village Hall.
