Salem Ladies auxiliary to meet today

SALEM-The Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Salem Post 892, will meet at 1 p.m. today at the post home to fill "ditty bags" that will be distributed to veterans confined to area nursing homes on Veterans Day. Members are urged to attend.

SHS Class of 1939 schedules lunch

SALEM-The Salem High School Class 1939 will meet for lunch at 11:30 a.m. Nov. 11 at the Salem Hills Golf and Country Club.

SALEM-The Salem High School Class of 1971 will meet for lunch at noon Nov. 28 at BB Rooners.

Breakfast announced for SHS Class of 1947

SALEM-The Salem High School Class of 1947 will meet for breakfast at 9 a.m. Nov. 19 at Salem Hills Golf and Country Club, 12688 Salem-Warren Road.

Eleanor May recognized at TOPS meeting

SALEM-Eleanor May was named TOPS when TOPS Chapter 1380 met Nov. 2 at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church.The runner-up was John McBride, who also shared honorable mention with Shirley Bullis. Laurie McBride won KOPS. The eight daisy charm was presented to Shirley Hartman, May and Bullis, while Margaret Phillips was given the 12 roses charm. May also received a 10-pounds loss braclet and McBride reached his 20 pounds loss goal. Dorothy Mussler reached her goal and advanced to KOPS. Anna Crum won the Rolling Cash 5. Cindy Eastman held therapy and Bullis read for the circle of light.

TOPS 1380 recognizes weekly award winners

SALEM-TOPS Chapter 1380 met Oct. 26 at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church. Weekly awards were presented to Eleanor May, TOPS; and Laurie McBride, KOPS. Royalty for the month of October went to Jeannie Luxeuil, TOPS; and Margaret Phillips, KOPS. Cindy Eastman read calorie cutting substitutes for therapy and Shirley Bullis read for the circle of light. There were double weight fines for the Nov. 2 meeting.

SHS drama to host

play Nov. 19 and 21

SALEM-The public is invited to the Salem High School Drama Department's presentation of its fall play, "The Man Who Came to Dinner" at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 19, and Saturday, Nov. 21. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students.

Senior citizens are invited to a special package program at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 21 at Salem High School which includes dinner and the play. Admission is $10. Dinner will be provided by the SHS Spanish Club and National Honor Society. Tickets may be purchased from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Nov. 4, 5, 11 and 12 in the high school cafeteria (enter through the back door). For more information call Anna Hutson at SHS at 330-332-8905.

Women's club to host brunch and home tours

COLUMBIANA-President Pat Tingle conducted the regular monthly meeting of the Women's Club Board of Directors on Oct. 26 at the club home. Treasurer Nancy Souder announced that the recent card party/style show had been very successful with standing room only for some. The slate of officers for 2010 was accepted. Tingle announced that a luncheon meeting and installation of officers will be held Nov. 30 at the club home.

Roberta Myers announced that tickets are available for the Christmas Brunch and Home Tours to be held Nov. 20 and 21. Home tours are scheduled from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and brunch will be served at the CWC from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day. Four local homes will be open for viewing and the second floor of the women's club will feature a display of illustrations from children's books and antique toys. Dorothy Bieshelt reported that the club's annual sale of red, white and pink poinsettias require that orders be in by Nov. 23. Plants will be available for pick-up on Nov. 27 and 28 at Roberta's Gallery. Orders may be phoned in to Bieshelt at 330-482-3966. Final business of the day was discussion and planning for the upcoming speaker's forum featuring professional speakers on various topics of interest to women. More information will be available after the holidays.

EPO Town and Country home tour planned

EAST PALESTINE-Tickets are still available for the East Palestine Town and Country Garden Club's Christmas Home Tour to be held from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Nov. 13, and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Nov. 14. This year's theme is "An Old Fashioned Country Christmas." Tickets are $10 and available at DND'S Restaurant, Flowers Straight from the Heart, The Sunflower Seed, Endia Wisser's Photography, Vivian's in Columbiana, Town and Country Nursery in New Springfield and 1820's in East Palestine. The five decorated homes include The Herriott residence "A Taste of a Country Christmas;" The Huff residence, "Racing into Christmas;" The Dunlap residence, "A Victorian Christmas;" The Fruit residence, "Primitive Treasures Borrowed from Nature;" and The Patrone residence, "Ye Old Time Christmas." Winona Ruritan Club elects officers

WINONA-The Winona Ruritan Club met Oct. 27 at the Methodist Church with 35 members and 15 guests present for Ladies Appreciation Night. The women were thanked for their efforts at the recent pancake and sausage breakfast when approximately 500 meals were served. Profits were disbursed to the Salvation Army in Salem and Hanoverton, Winona Volunteer Fire Department, United Way, Butler-Goshen Fund, United 4-H and to Willow Grove Grange. Elected as officers for 2010 are John Gamble, Jr., president; Homer Althouse, vice president; Bob Doyle, treasurer; Lee Stamp, secretary; Buster Rogowsky, three-year director; John Stamp, two-year director; Rob Donaldson, one year-director; and Bruce Marhefka, past president. Joan and Tom Althouse donated the school bell from the Winona Red Brick School House, District Nine. The bell will commemorate the John Althouse family and the club will display and preserve this part of Winona history and local pride. The next meeting is Nov. 10 at the church.

Helping Hands choose projects for the year

LISBON-The Helping Hands 4-H Club met on Oct. 26 with 11 members present. Those attending planned events for the year. Members will be visiting Beaver Creek Wildlife Educational Center and an animal shelter. Projects were also chosen for the year. The next meeting begins at 3:15 p.m. Nov. 23 in the IDL room at McKinley Elementary.

Holiday kick-off dance to be held in Canton

CANTON-Bob Blyer's Meadowbrook Big Band will present a holiday kick-off dance from 8 to 11 p.m. Nov. 20 at the Mayfield Center, 3825 13th St. S.W. Music played will be from the big band era and will also include Christmas selections. Vocalists are Kim Karam and Tom Falen. Tickets are $10 per person in advance and may be purchased by calling Blyer at 330-492-1983. Admission is $12 at the door.
