The Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Post 892 in Salem presented a new American flag to fly on the new flag pole in front of the Blossom Nursing and Rehabilitation Center on Monday, in time for Veterans Day that will be celebrated Wednesday, Nov. 11. Three residents, who are Korean War veterans, accepted the flag on behalf of Blossom. They are, from left, Richard Kleinman, Paul Ritchey and John Patterson, all U.S. Army infantry veterans. Linda Steffen, representing the auxiliary, made the formal presentation and noted Veterans Day was established in 1954 to honor all members of the Armed Forces who have served their country. It was declared a federal holiday in 1971. She said the auxiliary reminds citizens to check their flags for wear and replace them if needed. All old flags can be dropped off at VFW Post 892 at 496 Arch St. for the proper disposal. Blossom said it has nine veterans residing in the facility, including one woman.
