Houk earn dean's list at

U.S. Military Academy

WEST POINT, N.Y. - Cadet Charles Matthew Houk, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alan Houk of Homeworth, has been named to the dean's list for the fall semester, August through December, at the U.S. Military Academy.

To earn this distinction, a cadet must maintain a 3.0 average in all courses. The West Point curriculum offers 45 majors balancing physical sciences and engineering with humanities and social sciences leading to a bachelor's of science degree and was recently named the top college in the country by Forbes Magazine.

Houk graduated from United High School in 2007 and will be commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army upon graduation at West Point.

Leetonia kindergarten

registration scheduled

LEETONIA-Leetonia Elementary kindergarten registration will take place from 3 to 7 p.m. March 30 and from 9 a.m. to noon March 31 in the Elementary Media Center.

Children must be age 5 by Aug. 1 to be eligible to attend kindergarten for the 2010-11 school year.

Parents should bring the following to the registration session: child's birth certificate, immunization records, proof of residency (example lease agreement, property tax, employment record, utility bill, etc.), child's Social Security number, parent identification (example drivers license, birth certificate, etc.), and custody papers (if applicable).

West Branch kindergarten

is planned April 12-13

BELOIT-West Branch Local Schools will hold kindergarten registration for the 2010-11 school year on April 12 and 13 at West Branch High School.

Any child who is 5 years old by Sept. 30, 2010, is eligible to be registered.

The following items must be brought to registration: birth certificate, immunization records, Social Security card, custody/court papers (if applicable) and proof of residency (utility bill, purchase agreement or driver's license with your home address on it).

Salem Italian American Club

offering scholarships

SALEM-The Italian American Club of Salem is now accepting applications for 2010 Scholarship Awards.

The Scholarship Award is open to all area high school seniors who plan to attend a post-secondary institution.

The club offered its first scholarships to high school seniors in 2002. College student scholarships were first awarded in 2003. Since 2002, the club has had 13 award presentations. Over $111,000 has been awarded to a total of 237 students.

The criteria for the award are: High School GPA (cumulative through first semester of your senior year); ACT and/or SAT score, (the higher score will be used); a brief essay on your goals and aspirations; and preference will be given to applicants of Italian descent.

Scholarship recipients and award amounts will be determined by a committee under the guidelines established by the committee. Awards will be made directly to the college or university financial office. Students must return a completed application postmarked no later than April 24, 2010.

Scholarship applications are available from area high school guidance counselors, from the website IACSALEM.com, or by writing to The Salem Italian American Education Fund, Post Office Box 1060, Salem, Ohio 44460.

East Palestine band, choir

earn excellent rankings

EAST PALESTINE- The East Palestine High School Band, under the direction of Jennifer Mollenkopf, attended Ohio Music Education Association's District VIII large group adjudicated event on March 6 and received an "Excellent" rating. The EPHS Choir, under the direction of Anthony Chiporo, also participated in the competition and received an "Excellent" rating as well. The next performance for the EPHS Band begins at 7 p.m. April 8 in the EPHS gymnasium at the second annual Festival of Bands, a celebration of all Bulldog Bands grades five through 12. The next performance including both band and choir will be May 10 at the annual High School Evening at the Arts.

'Take Charge of Change' being

offered at Kent City Center

SALEM-Kent State Salem Workforce Development and Continuing Studies is offering "Take Charge of Change," geared for people challenged by personal or professional change, have given up on personal or professional goals, or are considering a career change but lack confidence in their abilities. This workshop is built around the ABC recipe for successful change (Action, Belief, Commitment).

The instructor is Nancy Christie, author of the inspirational book "The Gifts of Change," the e-host of the Community of Change website, and former host of Take Charge of Your Life radio show.

Miller named to dean's list

at Malone University

CANTON-Lori A. Miller of Salem was named to the dean's list for the Malone University Management Program classes.

Salem JH honors 'Featured

Students' for Jan. and Feb.

SALEM-Sean Kirkland, Salem Junior High School principal, announced "Featured Students" for the months of January and February.

Those selected for January were: Anthony Barcey, Tylor Bricker, Edward Butcher, Megan Daley, Hali Gorby, Kaylee Izenour, Megan Lehwald, Blake Mason, Dylan Mills, Haedan Panezott, Rachael Shockey, Victoria Stephens, Courtney Wagoner and Cassandra Wood.

February recipients were: Samantha Briceland, Joseph Cervone, Marcus Crittenden, Dustin Elliott, Andrea Kistler, Kelli Little, Michael Popa, Karly Tamulonis, Courtney Warneke and Devean Wolford. Their picture and biography was displayed at the school and later at McDonald's.

"Good Citizens of the Month" identifies and recognizes students for being nice, pleasant, and courteous individuals. The program is not academic based program as every student is eligible for the recognition. Once a month students are nominated at random by their teachers. Selected students are invited to a lunch with the principal and staff.

Those selected for January were: Jake Arsena, Tylor Bricker, Jesse Dotson, Mike Edgerton, Bryce Hendricks, Alisha House, Rachael Shockey, and Max Wolfgang. Those selected for February were: Timmy Erskine, Sam Hank, Sarah Kornbau, Ryan Meade, Sis Milliard, Kastephany Quinn, Carter Rose, Michelle Santini, Kim Shoaff, Matthew Shrontz, Sydney Spencer, Shelby Vacha, Dylan Whaley, William Weyand, Alex Weikart

In addition, the following junior high students were recent winners of Power of the Pen "Write Stuff," Christina Mitchell, Annaliese Radcliff, Emma Wilson, Max Wolfgang and Kailey Workman, who will advance to the regional competition at Kent State University. During the competition, each student will compose three pieces of writing, during three 40 minute sessions. Those scoring high enough will be notified by the end of March it they are eligible to continue to the State Competition at Wooster College.
