Columbiana restaurants seek bike race boost

July 8, 2010
By KEVIN HOWELL

COLUMBIANA- A collection of the city's most popular restaurants are aiming to lure tourists to the city during an annual professional bicycle race this weekend.

Sponsored by the Columbiana Retail Merchants and Business Association, "A Taste of Columbiana," featuring eight city restaurants, will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday in the Grace Church Fellowship Hall fellowship hall, 140 Main St.

The event is being held in conjunction with the second annual "Tour the Valley," a three-day cycling stage race traveling through the city Saturday afternoon.

"Last year the race brought in a lot of racers, but not necessarily spectators," said Larry Deidrick, president of the retail association. "So this year we have teamed up with several organizations to hopefully bring more people in."

Featured restaurants include Das Dutch Village Inn, Heck's Restaurant, Joe's Place BBQ & More, Lazy Bean Cafe, Links Firestone Farms Banquet, Paul's Antones Italian Cafe, R' Pizza Place and Shellabella's on Main.

Cost is $10 for 12 tickets, and each ticket is good for one sample from each eatery.

Votes will be tallied following the event to determine first, second and third place for "Best of the Taste" awards.

"We want everyone to know what we have here," Deidrick said. "Some people aren't aware of some of the great restaurants in Columbiana, and this is a great way to showcase them."

Other events being held in conjunction with "Tour the Valley" include children's bicycle races sponsored by the Rotary Club from 10 to 11 a.m.; adult amateur races beginning at noon; and a Kids Bike Safety Course and Bike Rodeo sponsored by the Columbiana Police Department from 10 to 11 a.m.. All three events will be held at the the start/finish line on Main Street in front of the AAA Building.

Additionally a Sports Expo will be held from noon to 4 p.m. in downtown.
