LEETONIA- Columbia Gas and NiSource inspectors are investigating an explosion at a Leetonia Road compressor station that sent two workers to the hospital Tuesday morning.
The explosion occurred at approximately 10:15 a.m. and sent the two contract workers to Salem Community Hospital for precautionary measures, according to Shawn Trahan, communications director for NiSource Gas Transmission & Storage.
Although no equipment was damaged in the explosion, and no fire ignited, the building will be closed until a full assessment is complete, Trahan said.
The cause of the explosion is unknown at this time.
Leetonia Fire and EMS provided stand by while the building was cleared.
According to Fire Chief Ken Garlough, workers reported they were conducting maintenance duties at the time of the explosion and did not know what could have caused it.
The explosion damaged the building's roof, as well as blew out the windows and part of a wall, Garlough said.
The facility is owned by Columbia Gas Transmission under the NiSource corporation.
