salem - Leo Joseph Taugher, of Salem, died at 10:04 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 5, 2010 at Hospice House in Poland, Ohio.

He was born April 7, 1920 in Peckville, PA, the son of the late Michael and Mame (Murray) Taugher.

Mr. Taugher was a 1939 graduate of Carbondale (PA) High School and v ice president of his class.

As a World War II veteran of the United States Marine Corps, he served as a transport quartermaster.

On May 15, 1944, he married Violet R. (DeRienzo) Taugher in a solemn military wedding at St.Paul Church.

Mr. Taugher worked for 25 years as an agent for the State of Ohio, Department of Taxation, retiring in 1976. He was also a financial officer of DeRienzo's Restaurant and a financial consultant for various local businesses.

A member of St. Paul Church, he also served as past trustee of Our Lady's Purse. A lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 1818, Salem, he held positions of Grand Knight, financial secretary and District Deputy.

A lifetime member of the Italian American Club, Mr. Taugher served as a club counselor. He was also a member and former treasurer of the Salem Golf Cub.

An avid golfer, he hit his first hole-n-one at age 85.

Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Violet R.; a son, Leo J. Taugher II of Salem; a daughter, Susan T. (William) Gregg of University Heights OH; a sister, Alice Warren of Bridgeport CT; two grandchildren, Benjamin J. Gregg and Christine N. Gregg of University Heights; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by sisters Mary Pinch and Margaret Cavanaugh and brothers Michael, Frances, James and Vincent Taugher.

The life of Mr. Taugher will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Tuesday with a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Paul Catholic Church with Reverend Robert Edwards officiating.

Calling hours will be held on Monday at the Stark

Memorial Funeral Home from 4 to 7 p.m. with a K of C service held at 7 p.m. Burial will be at the Grandview Cemetery with full military honors provided by the Salem V.F.W. Post 892 and Salem AMVETS Post 45 Burial Group.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Our Lady's Purse, 157 Ohio Ave. Salem, Ohio 44460 or Hospice of the Valley, 5190 Market St., Youngstown, Ohio 44512.
