Mr. and Mrs. James P. Fruit of Kent celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary Memorial Day weekend with a family reunion hosted by their children at Seven Springs Mountain Resort, Champion, Pa.
The former Dorothy A. Beck, daughter of Roy and Ruth (Riddle) Beck, and Mr. Fruit, son of the Rev. Byron S. and Jean (McCullough) Fruit, were married on July 14, 1951, at the Grace Lutheran Church of East Palestine. The Rev. Carl F. Duwe and Rev. Byron S. Fruit officiated.
Mr. Fruit retired as volunteer services coordinator at the Youth Development Center in New Castle, Pa., following his earlier career as manager of Beck Motors, East Palestine. He served in the U.S. Army in Germany during World War II. He received his bachelor's of arts from The Ohio State University and master's of art from Slippery Rock College.
Mrs. Fruit retired from Kent State University as director of the School of Family and Consumer Studies following her teaching career on the faculty. She established the KSU Gerontology major, and received state and national honors for her work in gerontology education. She was a graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University, and received her master's of arts from Kent State University.
The Fruits were active members of the First United Presbyterian Church of East Palestine, as well as many service and volunteer organizations before relocating to Kent in 1982. They are current members of the Presbyterian Church of Kent.
The couple's children are Jeffrey (Marcia) of East Palestine, Lynn (Ed Miller) of Tampa, Fla., and David of Davis, Calif. They also have six grandchildren, Byron (Jenifer), Callie (Patrick McFall), James and Roy Fruit, and Nick and Grant Miller.
