SALEM-Glenn L. Whitacre, 88, of Salem, died at 12:05 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 8, 2011, at the Essex of Salem III.
He was born June 10, 1923, in Salem, the son of the late Wilbur and Doris A. (Sell) Whitacre.
Before his retirement, Glenn had worked at Salem Auto Supply in auto parts sales and had previously worked at Dyke Motor Supply. He had been a lifelong area resident, a Salem High School graduate and a member of the Holy Trinity English Lutheran Church.
Glenn served in the U. S. Navy during WWII as ship's cook.
His wife, Mary (Kraynak) Whitacre, whom he married July 20, 1946, survives him along with four sons, Dennis C. Whitacre of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., Glenn A. Whitacre of Munroe Falls, Ohio, Allan M. Whitacre of Akron and Nicholas J. Whitacre of Stow; a sister, Gladys Tawny Wooley of Destin, Fla,; and three grandchildren, Anna, Joseph and Jeffrey Whitacre.
A grandson, John Whitacre, preceded him in death.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Holy Trinity English Lutheran Church with Pastor Connie Sassanella officiating.
Calling hours will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Stark Memorial Funeral Home. Interment will be at Highland Memorial Park.
