Vote board: No recount needed for Columbiana Council

November 30, 2011
By TOM GIAMBRONI , Salem News

LISBON - No recount will be needed in the race for the third seat on Columbiana City Council, with incumbent Bob Bieshelt holding onto his seat after the Mahoning County vote totals were included.

The Columbiana County Board of Elections met Tuesday to officially include the vote totals cast in those races in northern communities and school districts that overlap into Mahoning County. The elections board met last week to certify the results of the Nov. 8 election but had to wait until Mahoning County had certified its election results to include those totals.

When the Mahoning County results were included Bieshelt finished ahead of Richard McBane, 952 to 932, to capture the third seat on Columbiana council.

The only remaining question was whether the results were close enough to trigger an automatic recount. Elections board Director Adam Booth said the difference between the two would have needed to be 18 votes or less for an automatic recount to occur.

There are two automatic recounts required in the race for one of the seats on Wellsville council and the East Palestine school board. The board is to meet this morning to conduct those recounts, which include a hand count of one precinct in each race.

The following are the final combined results for contested races and ballot issues in those northern communities and school districts that overlap into Mahoning County:

- Washingtonville Mayor: William Jones, 105; Norman Sommers, 68.

- Fairfield Township Fiscal Officer: Pat Hoffmaster, 1,928; Michael Harold, 1,037.

- Fairfield Township, renewal of 1.6-mill road levy: for, 2,255; against, 1316.
