New AD, 1st ever assistant AD named

WEST BRANCH

December 29, 2011
By KEVIN HOWELL , Salem News

Beloit- The West Branch school board Wednesday morning hired a former boys basketball coach and a captain from the 2004 girls basketball state champion team to helm the athletic department.

The board unanimously hired as athletic director Robert McCosky, who coached the varsity boys basketball team from 1973 to 1997, and Ellie Geiger as the assistant director. Both positions will take effect on July 1, replacing John Ault, athletic director for the past three years, who will retire at the end of the 2011-2012 school year.

Citing the 182-day school year featuring hundreds of games, tournaments and events at the high school and middle school levels, as well as the need to oversee nearly 75 coaches and coordinate home and away contests and tournaments, schools Superintendent Dr. Scott Weingart said that the job could no longer be filled by one person.

"The demands of the athletic director position have grown to the point where the board believes that an assistant athletic director is needed to maintain the quality of our programs and to provide the necessary supervision at both home and away contests," he explained in a written statement. "These two individuals bring a wide range of experience and expertise to our district, and we believe that the move to an athletic director and assistant athletic director will provide strength and stability to our programs and to our students."

McCosky has worked at West Branch since 1973 as a business education and drivers' education teacher, in addition to his coaching duties. Since his retirement in 2003 he has served as faculty manager for the athletic program as well as the attendance coordinator and drivers' education teacher at the high school.

A 2004 West Branch graduate, Geiger was a captain on the 2004 state championship girls basketball team. She graduated in 2008 from Mount Union College, where she played basketball and served as captain, and obtained a master's of science degree in Sports Administration from West Virginia State University in 2010. Currently she is an exercise science instructor at Manchester College in Indiana, where she also serves as assistant girls basketball coach and assistant strength and conditioning coordinator in addition to assisting with all aspects of game day athletics management.
