Salem 8, Canton South 7

SALEM - The Salem Lady Quakers got their first win but unfortunately lost their starting pitcher Thursday. Salem beat Canton South 8-7 but starter Angela Woods broke her ankle sliding into third base in the fifth inning.

Leading Salem was Deanna Walker with a double, two singles and three RBIs. Morgan Crosser added two doubles and a single. Katie McDevitt tallied two singles. Sarah Smith had an RBI triple, and Angela Woods and Alexis Smith added a single an an RBI each.

Salem (1-3, 1-1 NBC) will play a doubleheader Saturday at United.

MINERVA - West Branch's Emily Weber struck out five of the last six batters she faced and the Lady Warriors won 2-1 in eight innings.

Bailey McElwain knocked in the game-winning RBI on a single in the top of the eighth. Jessica Richards also added two hits and an RBI.

West Branch (3-1, 2-0 NBC) plays against East Palestine today in the Ursuline Tournament.

EAST PALESTINE - East Palestine's Emily Duncan had three hits and led the Lady Bulldogs to a 5-1 win. Karli Pence got the win on the mound for East Palestine (2-0).

SALEM - Alliance used a seven-run third inning to power past Salem 14-10 Thursday. Jared Grimes had two hits, two runs and three RBIs for the Aviators (2-0).

For Salem, Zach Econmous went 4-for-4 with two runs scored. Brendan Webb went 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Jon Fortney had two hits and two RBIs. Storm Haueter had three hits and two RBIs. Jake Carner had two hits and two runs, Seth Leininger added two hits and a run scored.

Salem (0-3, 0-2 NBC) plays Struthers today at Cene Park.

CARROLLTON - West Branch improved to 3-0 on the season also picking up its second win in the NBC dropping Carrollton 8-4.

Leading the Warriors was Jacob Clayton with three hits, two runs and two RBIs. Matt Unkefer added two hits including a double and two RBIs, and Beau Taylor had a double and drove in three.

Jake Mull got the win striking out six over three innings.

Springield improves to 2-0 and 2-0 in Tier 1 of the ITCL. East Palestine falls to 0-3, 0-2.

Canton South vs. Salem

CANTON - The Salem boys and girls track teams split their meet this week. The Salem boys team won 86-41. Canton South beat the girls team 71.5 to 56.5.

Salem's Anthony Shivers set the school discus record previously held by Mike King with a throw of 166-8.

The girls team is back in action today for the F.E. Cope Invitational at Reilly Stadium.

Salem vs. Canton South

SALEM - Salem defeated Canton South 10-6 Thursday in jayvee softball action.

Leading Salem was Rachel Menegos with two hits including a home run. Raegan Meals added a solo home run. Rylee Meals added two hits.

Hannah Carner got the win on the mound striking out four.

Salem (2-2, 2-0 NBC) will play a doubleheader against United at home Saturday.

Junior High Track

Salem vs. Canton South

SALEM - The Salem junior high team opened its season against Canton South. The boys won 89.5-24.5. The girls lost 68-45.

Cooper Bezeredi of Salem won the 800 (2:34.1) and 1600 (5:29.2). Salem's Amando Valiente won the shot put (32-6), and Katie Moore won the discus (62-8).
