HAMMONDSVILLE - Two Jefferson County residents escaped their manufactured home Tuesday afternoon before it was quickly destroyed by fire.

The structure was engulfed in flame when firefighters arrived at the home of Jim and Linda Excell at 1395 Pine Grove Road just after 4 p.m. Pine Grove Road is off state Route 213 near Stanton Junior High.

Andy Davis, bureau chief of prevention and investigations for Irondale Fire and Rescue Department, said a flash fire occurred while the couple were cooking.

Two firefighters were treated at East Liverpool City Hospital for heat exhaustion.

Disaster Services workers from the Red Cross were on hand to assist the residents with clothing and other necessities. They also provided cold drinks to firefighters.

Saline Township EMS, Tri-County Ambulance and Toronto EMS responded along with firefighters from four volunteer departments. They were at the scene for about four hours.

Davis said more than two dozen firefighters from Irondale, Highlandtown, Bergholz and Wellsville responded. Irondale and Highlandtown brought nine firefighters each. Wellsville had four at the scene and another crew and truck were on standby at the Irondale station. Six Bergholz firefighters responded.

Besides assisting Irondale with coverage at the station and helping get the fire under control, firefighters also transported water to the scene.
