Flash fire destroys Jefferson County home

HAMMONDSVILLE - Two Jefferson County residents escaped their manufactured home Tuesday afternoon before it was quickly destroyed by fire.

The structure was fully engulfed in flame when firefighters arrived at the home of Jim and Linda Excell at 1395 County Road 72 - Pine Grove Road - just after 4 p.m. Pine Grove Road is off of state Route 213 near Edison Local Schools' Stanton Junior High.

Andy Davis, bureau chief of prevention and investigations for Irondale Fire and Rescue Department, said a flash fire occurred while the couple were cooking.

Two firefighters were treated at East Liverpool City Hospital for heat exhaustion.

Disaster Services workers from the American Red Cross Jefferson County Chapter were on hand to assist the residents with clothing and other necessities. They also provided cold drinks to firefighters.

Saline Township EMS, Tri-County Ambulance and Toronto EMS responded along with firefighters from four volunteer departments. They were at the scene for about four hours.

Davis said more than two dozen firefighters from Irondale, Highlandtown, Bergholz and Wellsville responded Irondale and Highlandtown responded with nine firefighters each. Wellsville had four at the fire scene and another crew and truck were on standby at the Irondale Station. Six Bergholz firefighters also responded.

Besides assisting Irondale with coverage at the station and helping get the fire under control, firefighters also transported water to the scene.
