Coroner details baby’s injuries

June 8, 2012
By DEANNE JOHNSON , Salem News

LISBON - First thing Thursday morning, County Coroner Dr. William Graham took the stand in the murder trial of Miranda Todd.

Graham testified about the 18 injuries to Derek Dennison's body agreeing often with the findings of Dr. Joseph Felo of the Cuyahoga County coroner's office, who performed the autopsy. He enumerated the injuries and illustrated them by marking them on a chart showing baby's body from three directions.

When asked about whether Dennison's 11 rib fractures would have been painful, Graham told Assistant County Prosecutor Tammie Riley Jones if she had ever had a rib injury she would not be asking him that question.

"Just breathing or sneezing or laughing, very painful," Graham said.

Graham reviewed the autopsy, reports from police investigators and his own investigators before making the determination of the manner of death.

"There is one obvious answer for Derek Dennison and that's homicide," said Graham, who is responsible for making that determination for all investigated deaths in the county.
