James W. Sutherin Sr.

COLUMBIANA - James W. Sutherin Sr., 82, of Columbiana, formerly of East Palestine and Colorado, died at 11:59 p.m. Friday at his residence following a lengthy illness.

He was born Dec.18, 1929 in Negley, a son of the late Miah "Hap" and Grace Murphy Sutherin, and had resided in East Palestine until moving to Colorado in 1967, and returning to this area in 1994. He had been employed as a heavy equipment operator, and as a machinist, until retiring several years ago. He was a U.S. Marine veteran.

He was a member of the Centenary United Methodist Church, East Palestine.

His wife, the former Eleanor Manzi, whom he married Oct. 22, 1952, preceded him in death on April 18, 2008.

He is survived by a son, James W. Sutherin Jr., Tempe, Ariz.; a daughter, Stephanie (Walt) Freese, South Burlington, Vt.; and a sister, Dorothy Haun, Negley. He also leaves a granddaughter and two step-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Oliver-Linsley Funeral Home, East Palestine, with James Ostick of the First Church of Christ, officiating.

Burial will follow in Columbiana Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by the combined units of the American Legion Post 31 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4567, both of East Palestine. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday. A masonic service will be held during calling hours.
