Parachute jumper at rodeo

LISBON - A parachute jumper is scheduled to appear at Hoppel's Rodeo for Veterans Night at 7 p.m. today. All veterans are admitted free with a military ID.

Saturday is Breast Cancer Awareness Night. All raffle money will be donated to the mammogram department at the Columbiana County Health Department.

A concession stand will be open in addition to the newest concessionaires, "Rising Hope Therapeutic Center." All proceeds from the center go to the riding program that helps children with ADHD, autism and other disorders.

Those attending are asked to bring blankets and lawn chairs for seating. For more information contact 330-424-2051 or

Salem 1972 breakfast/reunion

SALEM - The Salem High School Class of 1972 will hold its monthly breakfast at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Salem Hills Golf and Country Club.

The 40th reunion begins at 6 p.m. July 26 on the deck at BB Rooners. On July 27, breakfast will be served at 9 a.m. at Salem Hills. At 2 p.m., the Underground Railroad Trolley Tour will be presented by the Salem Historical Society.

The reunion follows at 6 p.m. at Hickory Hollow Memorial Park. July 28 kicks off with breakfast 9 a.m. at Salem Hills; 11 a.m. for the first tee time at Flying B; and 6 p.m. with the New Breed at the Saxon Club.

The class is sponsoring a 50/50 raffle to benefit the alumni association. The drawing takes place Saturday at the Saxon Club. Barb Capel Shaffer is in charge of the raffle. For more information call Jim Stewart at 330-429-2752.

Garage sale in Canfield

CANFIELD - The Alzheimer Network is holding its annual garage sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 12 and 13 and 9 a.m. to noon July 14 at Western Reserve United Methodist Church, 4580 Canfield Road. Proceeds will support the local services of the Alzheimer Network with a portion designated for research.

Donations of clean, saleable items will be accepted from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 9 and 10 at the church. No pick-up of items is available. The Alzheimer Network is a charitable non-profit organization. For further information call 330-788-9755.

Rifle marksmanship clinic

SALEM -The Project Appleseed Rifle Marksmanship clinic, provided by the Revolutionary War Veterans Association, is scheduled July 14 and 15 the Salem Hunting Club. Benefit poker run

SALEM - A poker run to benefit cerebral palsy will be held July 15 at the Salem Elks Lodge, 824 E. State St. Sign-ups begin at 9 a.m. Bikes (and cars) will leave at 11 a.m. from the lodge. Cost is $10 per person.

Lunch and Learn Program

COLUMBIANA - The final in the series of Columbiana Women's Club Lunch and Learn Programs starts at 12:15 p.m. July 16 at the clubhouse, 121 N. Main St. Those attending will learn about the history of auctions and participate in a variety of mock auctions. A few items will be auctioned off for the benefit of the CWC. Lunch is free for members/friends, and $5 for guests. Reservations may be made by calling 330-207-1470.

'Magic Feet' to perform

LEETONIA- Members of "Magic Feet," a Cleveland contra dance band, will perform at 6 p.m. on Tuesday at the Leetonia Community Public Library. Janet LaMonica will give a presentation on the role of the piano in contra dance music followed by a mini concert of dance tunes from the Civil War Era. A teaching session of dance will follow. Contra dancing, similar to square or line dancing, is family friendly and no partner is needed.

The library is also accepting registration for an origami craft session at 2 p.m. July 12. There is no cost except for those who wish to take extra paper home. To register call the library at 33-427-6635

National Guard in Civil War topic Tuesday

SALEM - Civil War authority and East Liverpool historian Attorney Timothy R. Brookes will speak when the Salem Historical Society meets at 7 p.m. July 10. Because of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, a timely topic titled "Columbiana County in the Ohio National Guard during the Civil War," delivered by Brookes will feature information of interest to the local historian.

Brookes was admitted to the bar in 1979. He has had a lifelong (at least since age 5) interest in the Civil War. He graduated from Kent State University and the Ohio State University College of Law. He has served as president of the East Liverpool Historical Society since 1987 and has written numerous historical articles for "Timeline," published by the Ohio Historical Society and for "Military Images."

The meeting will be held in the meeting room along East Alley off East Pershing. For information contact the museum at 330-337-8514. Serving as greeter will be Judy White. April Trenkelbach and David Shivers will provide refreshments.
